Summary

In "Passages from a Relinquished Work," Nathaniel Hawthorne offers a poignant glimpse into his creative process and philosophical contemplations. This fragmentary piece, extracted from the broader collection "Mosses from an Old Manse," showcases Hawthorne's characteristic prose style, blending Romantic sensibilities with deeply introspective and allegorical elements. The work grapples with themes of alienation, the nature of artistry, and the inherent complexity of human existence, reflecting Hawthorne's engagement with both the personal and the universal. The fragment's unfinished quality invites readers into the mind of the author, allowing them to explore the juxtaposition of aspiration and limitation in his literary journey. Nathaniel Hawthorne, an emblematic figure of American literature, navigated the tensions of his Puritan heritage while drawing inspiration from the rich traditions of the Transcendentalist movement. His life experiences, including his tumultuous relationship with themes of guilt and moral ambiguity, profoundly influenced his writing. The unfinished nature of this work parallels Hawthorne's own struggles with expressing his artistic vision amid societal and personal constraints. Readers keen on understanding the nuances of Hawthorne's literary artistry and philosophical inquiries will find "Passages from a Relinquished Work" particularly illuminating. This text not only enhances the appreciation of his oeuvre but also serves as a meditation on the creative process itself, making it a compelling read for anyone interested in the undercurrents of 19th-century American literature.

Stéphane Breitwieser and the Greatest Art Thief in History

Between 1995 and 2001, a man walked into 239 museums across Europe and walked out with objects that did not belong to him. He stole paintings by Rubens, Brueghel, and Watteau. He took sculptures, manuscripts, and artifacts that had survived wars and centuries. He carried them out beneath his jacket while guards stood at exits and cameras recorded visitors passing through galleries. No one stopped him. For six years, no one even knew it was the same person.

Stéphane Breitwieser did not steal for money. He never sold a single piece. He kept everything in a locked attic room in his mother's house in Mulhouse, France, where he sat alone for hours, surrounded by beauties.

What seemed like an endless reign of theft would soon be shattered by one mistake that would unravel the whole empire of stolen treasures.

In June 2019, Valerie French Kilroy was brutally murdered by her husband at their home near Westport, while her three young sons lay in bed. For her brother David and the rest of her family, it was the beginning of a battle against a system unprepared to protect the three innocent children whose father remains their legal guardian, despite being convicted of their mother's murder.
From the devastating shock of hearing of his sister's death to the multiple criminal trials before the guilty verdict was delivered, David describes the issues his family faced in the aftermath of Valerie's murder. He provides a deeply personal insight into Valerie's marriage and the hidden struggles she faced in the run-up to her murder.
This book is both a heartfelt tribute to Valerie's life and legacy and an urgent call to rethink the way our society responds to domestic homicide.

**Independent Publisher Book Award (IPPY) Winner**Now Available on Audio. An incredible, untold story of survival and acceptance that sheds light on one of the darkest chapters in Japanese history. This book tells the story of Kazuo Odachi who—in 1943, when he was just 16 years-old—joined the Imperial Japanese Navy to become a pilot. A year later, he was unknowingly assigned to the Kamikaze Special Attack Corps—a group of airmen whose mission was to sacrifice their lives by crashing planes into enemy ships. Their call sign was ""ten dead, zero alive.""As you listen to Memoirs of a Kamikaze, you will experience the hardships of fighter pilot training—dipping and diving and watching as other trainees crash into nearby mountainsides. you will witness the psychological trauma of coming to terms with death before each mission, and breathe a sigh of relief with Odachi when his last mission is cut short by Japan's eventual surrender. You will feel the anger at a government and society that swept so much of the sacrifice under the rug in its desperation to rebuild.Odachi's innate ""samurai spirit"" carried him through childhood, WWII and his eventual life as a kendo instructor, police officer and detective. His attention to detail, unwavering self-discipline and impenetrably strong mind were often the difference between life and death. Odachi, who is now well into his nineties, kept his Kamikaze past a secret for most of his life. Seven decades later, he agreed to sit for nearly seventy hours of interviews with the authors of this book—who know Odachi personally. He felt it was his responsibility to finally reveal the truth about the Kamikaze pilots: that they were unsuspecting teenagers and young men asked to do the bidding of superior officers who were never held to account. This book offers a new perspective on these infamous suicide pilots. It is not a chronicle of war, nor is it a collection of research papers compiled by scholars. It is a transcript of Odachi's words.

Written while she was still a teenager, My Brilliant Career catapulted young Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin (writing as Miles Franklin) into worldwide fame. In fact, the sudden popularity of the book in Australia (and the perceived closeness of the plot to her own family history) caused Franklin to withdraw the book from publication until after her death.
The story centers on Sybylla Melvyn, a headstrong girl growing up in rural Australia whose family is plunged into debt by their alcoholic father. Young Sybylla's story follows her romance with suitor Harold Beecham, her forced servitude to one of her father's creditors and her attempts to become a famous writer.
Long hailed as one of the most popular and celebrated works in Australian literary history, My Brilliant Career is presented here in its original and unabridged format.
