Summary

Nathan Whittacre has seen it all! Through his many years of creating systems and processes to help businesses succeed, he has firsthand knowledge of what goes disastrously wrong when the right systems are not in place. His many stories from being “in the field” can be seen throughout the book, often when he is called into rescue businesses that have fallen prey to threats from both inside and outside the organization. But he helps CEOs to understand that the best solution to avoiding the dangers these threats consistently present is prevention. This book details all the systems available to do exactly that, and in which instances they are best employed.

Get on the express for Bitcoin: Know How Does Bitcoin Work and How to Use It like Money You probably have seen it discussed in the news or around the Internet. Heck, you may even have heard your techie friend babbling about at one point when you couldn't care less...until now, with a changed heart and reconsidered mind.
We're talking about the next big thing - bitcoin.
As you may or may not realize, the next revolution is upon us (if not already here) in how we will forever conduct monetary trade with the already large quantity of transactions done electronically every day and still on the rise where basically our money can be considered digitalized. And with that, arises bitcoin.
Are your still scratching your head...what is bitcoin? How does bitcoin work? In order to understand bitcoin, you have to understand the difference between currency and money.
Currency is a tangible form of money. In other words, money is intrinsic while currency is extrinsic. For example, paper can represent money; coins can represent money. In this case, currency equals those paper and coins as mediums of exchange. Currency has had an ever-evolving long history: from bartering with commodities like grains and livestock, to trading with stones and coins, and to using paper dollar bill money as we know of today.
The problem with the dollar bill or paper money is that the government can easily print more of this paper that represents money, and has been doing so...thus causing inflation with your paper money to worth less than it actually is. Contrast to gold, the government can't create gold like they do with printed money. The value is based on scarcity.

The New Fire - War Peace and...

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the modern world. It is ubiquitous—in our homes and offices, in the present and most certainly in the future. Today, we encounter AI as our distant ancestors once encountered fire. If we manage AI well, it will become a force for good, lighting the way to many transformative inventions. If we deploy it thoughtlessly, it will advance beyond our control. If we wield it for destruction, it will fan the flames of a new kind of war, one that holds democracy in the balance. As AI policy experts Ben Buchanan and Andrew Imbrie show in The New Fire, few choices are more urgent—or more fascinating—than how we harness this technology and for what purpose. The new fire has three sparks: data, algorithms, and computing power. These components fuel viral disinformation campaigns, new hacking tools, and military weapons that once seemed like science fiction. To autocrats, AI offers the prospect of centralized control at home and asymmetric advantages in combat. It is easy to assume that democracies, bound by ethical constraints and disjointed in their approach, will be unable to keep up. But such a dystopia is hardly preordained. Combining an incisive understanding of technology with shrewd geopolitical analysis, Buchanan and Imbrie show how AI can work for democracy. With the right approach, technology need not favor tyranny.

21st-Century Yokel explores the way we can be tied inescapably to landscape, whether we like it or not, often through our family and our past. It's not quite a nature book, not quite a humour book, not quite a family memoir, not quite folklore, not quite social history, not quite a collection of essays, but a bit of all seven. It contains owls, badgers, ponies, beavers, otters, bats, bees, scarecrows, dogs, ghosts and yes, even a few cats. What emerges from this are themes that are broader, bigger and more definitive.

A clear, concise primer on the GDPRThe GDPR aims to unify data protection and ease the flow of personal data across the EU. It applies to every organisation in the world that handles EU residents' personal data. While the GDPR is not law in countries outside the EU, it is effectively part of the legislative environment for organisations that do business with the EU. This is enforced through a combination of international trade law and business pressure – after all, a partner in the EU is unlikely to want to risk engaging with a company in the US, Australia or Singapore (or anywhere else) that will put them at risk.EU GDPR – An international guide to compliance is the ideal resource for anyone wanting a clear primer on the principles of data protection and their obligations under the GDPR.A concise pocket guide, it will help you understand:- The terms and definitions used in the GDPR, including explanations;- The key requirements of the GDPR, including:- Which fines apply to which Articles;- The principles that should be applied to any collection and processing of personal data;- The Regulation's applicability;- Data subjects' rights;- Data protection impact assessments;- The data protection officer role and whether you need one;- Data breaches, and notifying supervisory authorities and data subjects; and- Obligations for international data transfers.- How to comply with the Regulation, including:- Understanding your data, and where and how it is used (e.g. Cloud suppliers, physical records);- The documentation you must maintain (such as statements of the information you collect and process, records of data subject consent, processes for protecting personal data); and- The "appropriate technical and organisational measures" you need to take to ensure compliance with the Regulation.- A full index of the Regulation, enabling you to find relevant Articles quickly and easily.Supplemental material While most of the EU GDPR's requirements are broadly unchanged in the UK GDPR, the context is quite different and will have knock-on effects. You may need to update contracts regarding EU–UK data transfers, incorporate standard contractual clauses into existing agreements, and update your policies, processes and procedural documentation as a result of these changes.  We have published a supplement that sets out specific extra or amended information for this pocket guide. Click here to download the supplement. About the authorAlan Calder is the Group CEO of GRC International Group plc, the AIM-listed company that owns IT Governance Ltd.
