New York, August 1896. A "hot wave" has settled on the city with no end in sight, leaving tempers short and the streets littered with dead horses felled by the heat. In this presidential election year, the gulf between rich and poor has political passions flaring, while anti-immigrant sentiment has turned virulent. At police headquarters, the gruff, politically ambitious commissioner Theodore Roosevelt has been struggling to reform his notoriously corrupt department. Meanwhile, the yellow press is ready to pounce on the peccadilloes of the Four Hundred, the city's social elite—the better to sell papers with lurid stories and gossip or perhaps profit from a little blackmail on the side. When the body of Town Topics publisher William d'Alton Mann is found at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, any number of his ink-spattered victims may have a motive.Hot Time is an immensely entertaining, deeply researched, and richly textured historical novel set in a period that reflects our own, with cameos by figures ranging from financier J. P. Morgan to journalist Jacob Riis. Our guides through New York are Otto "Rafe" Raphael, one of the first Jewish officers in the heavily Irish force; Minnie Kelly, the department's first female stenographer; Theodore Roosevelt himself; and the plucky orphan Dutch, one of the city's thousands of newsboys, who may have seen too much.

In 1965, Paul Harvey, a voice resonant with prophetic insight, delivered a broadcast that would echo through the decades. His "If I Were the Devil" was not merely a monologue but a chilling foresight, a catalog of malevolence that seemed to unspool the very fabric of the future. Here, listed, are the stratagems he attributed to the devil himself:Promote discord and discontentUndermine family structuresEncourage selfishness and materialismErode faith and spiritualityPromote moral relativismEncourage trust in government over self-relianceFoster dependency on state welfareUndermine educational standardsPromote the normalization of addictions
Ah, but let us now turn the page to a more... current narrative. I am Master Fewnu, and let me be perfectly clear: any resemblance my moniker bears to worldly institutions is purely coincidental, whimsically serendipitous, you might say. I find myself in a peculiar era, the year 2030, where my machinations have woven themselves into the very tapestry of human society. And, oh, how delightfully easy it was!
Humans, those endearingly gullible creatures, have outdone themselves in paving the way for my reign. The beauty of my plan lies in its simplicity: convince humanity that they are progressing, all while they dance like marionettes to the discordant symphony I conduct. And dance they do, with a fervor that borders on the comical.
Let us indulge in a bit of self-adulation, shall we? After all, it's not pride if it's deserved. My strategy was a masterpiece of deception and manipulation, a veritable feast of folly. With every step they took away from unity, from the sanctity of the family, from the very essence of their faith and moral compass, they stepped closer to me...

In David Lodge's last novel, Thinks... the novelist Henry James was invisibly present in quotation and allusion. In Author, Author he is centre stage, sometimes literally. The story begins in December 1915, with the dying author surrounded by his relatives and servants, most of whom have private anxieties of their own, then loops back to the 1880s, to chart the course of Henry's 'middle years', focusing particularly on his friendship with the genial Punch artist and illustrator, George Du Maurier. By the end of the decade Henry is seriously worried by the failure of his books to 'sell', and decides to try and achieve fame and fortune as a playwright, at the same time that George Du Maurier, whose sight is failing, diversifies into writing novels. The consequences, for both men, are surprising, ironic, comic and tragic...
