A pictorial history of the groundbreaking jet bomber known as the Arado 234, including never-before-seen archival photos.   This is the story of the Arado 234, an aircraft that on one day in 1944, in the skies above Normandy, heralded the beginning of a new era in military aviation.   Many individuals over many years have contributed to the field of developmental aviation. One of these key players is Heinrich Lubbe, a man who marked the evolution of aerial transportation through his cultivation of technological excellence. From flying lessons given to him by his friend Roland Garros, to the creation of the Arado business, Lubbe made a significant impact and left a lasting legacy. His machines were flown by exceptional pilots such as Horst Gotz and Erich Sommer, known as “des moustachus” (the moustachioed). In Hitler’s Germany, the Arado jets were put to work in a variety of contexts. Perhaps most significantly, they were employed in the task of photo-reconnaissance during the Battle for Normandy, following the iconic landings of June 1944. In this role, they brought back extraordinary images from the invasion beaches, revealing with astounding detail the positions and plans of the Allied forces. These images, previously unseen by the public, shed new light on the battle, at the same time proving the Germans’ indisputable superiority in the field of jet aviation. The fact that American troops hastened to transfer the Arado AR234 and Messerschmitt 262 to the USA to uncover all their secrets post-war says a lot about how they were viewed in the eyes of the enemy.   In addition to many top-secret aerial images, this book is enriched with photographs from the personal archives of Erich Sommer, the Arado pilot, which have never before been published. Packed with both color and black and white images, this book and represents an impressive pictorial history of the world’s first jet bomber.

The repairman—A sci-fi story about a lighthouse, lizard like life forms, the lighthouse repairman, and a robot... My boss leaned back, wiped his hands on his handkerchief and gave me Lecture Forty-four on Company Duty and My Troubles. 'This department is officially called Maintenance and Repair, when it really should be called trouble-shooting. Hyperspace beacons are made to last forever—or damn close to it. When one of them breaks down, it is never an accident, and repairing the thing is never a matter of just plugging in a new part.' He was telling me—the guy who did the job while he sat back on his fat paycheck in an air-conditioned office.

Sometimes, anyone of us has to come up against certain circumstances which result to the thing that it’s very difficult to fall asleep. We may lie in bed and tumble, understanding full well that we need to have sleep out and rest; for there’s a new day ahead, and we shall be hale and hearty. But compulsive thoughts return from time to time, prying us again from the arms of Morpheus. Supposedly, you’ve already gone to the waves of your inner space, observing frequently abstract pictures of dreams. But at some point, hairy clawed paws of reality snatch you away, and again, you find yourself laying in your bed with your restless mind doing the harlem shake, agonizing about falling asleep at last. And today, I will help you with this. Just follow the vibrations of my voice.

This memoir of a year on a virtually uninhabited Scottish island, including illustrations of flora and fauna, is “the next best thing to being there” (Scotland on Sunday).Wild Island depicts a year in the life of Oronsay, a remote Scottish island that is farmed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and follows artist Jane Smith as she attempts to portray the interactions of wildlife, farm animals, and a small number of human inhabitants. A humorous, first-hand, personal view of island life, both human and otherwise, the book is illustrated with Smith’s vibrant and acutely observed sketches, paintings, and prints. She invites us into her world as she delves into such questions as: What does it feel like to sit in a bog all day? Where are a bird's knees? And why do I always wind up covered in acrylic paint? Musing on encounters with creatures from otters to oil beetles, conservation management, and the tides, winds, and ferries that affect each journey to and from the island, Smith offers a beautiful portrait of a special place—and shares the ridiculous things that happen when living on a remote island, cut off from the rest of the world.

Do corporate culture and leadership contribute to a firm's success? And if so, how? How can a company create and develop its corporate culture to compete successfully over the long term? Answers to these questions emerge in case studies of the business practices of six long-established and world-renowned companies: the BMW Group, Deutsche Lufthansa, Grundfos, Henkel, Hilti and Novo Nordisk. In a project initiated by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, researchers investigated these firms and analyzed the central characteristics of corporate success from a culture perspective. The case studies render a detailed picture of each firm's distinctive corporate culture and the factors that shape it. Based on these examples, Sonja A. Sackmann has identified concrete strategies and practices that illustrate how a company's management can make a significant contribution toward developing a dialogue-oriented corporate culture that supports a firm's viability. The appendix provides a checklist for readers who want to develop their firm's culture and practice culturally aware management.
