  The concept of international trade was born in the ancient Mediterranean, which provided the perfect set of circumstances needed to produce an intricate trading system whose influence can still be seen in present-day economic practices. The ancient Mediterranean was home to a diverse range of cultures and landscapes, encompassing deserts, forests, islands and fertile plains. Different natural resources were available in different geographical areas, and with the advent of sailing ships around 3000 B.C., people were suddenly able to travel much further afield than ever before. This created an opportunity to trade local resources in international markets in exchange for exotic goods not available at home.  
  	At the same time, this shift in Mediterranean trade from a local to international scale was a catalyst for immense social, political and economic changes that helped to shape the course of Western Civilization as a whole. Starting with the Egyptians and Minoans around 3000 B.C. until the decline of the Roman Empire at the end of the 5th century A.D., ancient trade in the Mediterranean brought cultures into increasingly close contact with one another, and just as in the globalized world today, these cross-cultural influences came to shape the development of belief systems, languages, economics, politics, and art throughout wide expanses of land. Traders introduced foreign goods, but also foreign ideas and new methods of expression, and they in turn took new ideas home with them from the places they visited.  
  	Most importantly, the evidence researchers have for tracing trade is usually incomplete and scattered due to the destruction brought about by the Sea Peoples, who are credited for ending the Bronze Age with their invasions across the region. The collapse of Mediterranean trade thrust most of the once powerful civilizations along the sea into what historians now call a “Dark Age”, and it would take several centuries to recover.

She rides a Honda 90 motor bike across the Engiish fens on her way to cover stories in  March, birthplace of the fabled March hare, She writes stories about a drunken turnip planter, a man named Jack Spratt, another man who didn't travel as far as his own bees. She writes about being bitten by a totters horse and of a local crazy woman who used to shout up at the newspapers weed ridden gutters. She lived in a house of many young women in Chalk Farm London and as a young wife on a Royal Airforce base in Cambridgeshire. Story telling runs deep within in her and as a young Australian in England she certainly got that opportunity.

  In 1937, the fledgling Empire of Japan once more went to war with China, which by then had become a nation broken into petty warlord fiefdoms and wracked by civil war. The Japanese enacted a brutal campaign over the fragmented realms that made up China, committing atrocities just as horrendous as their Axis allies in Europe. Despite this, the sheer size of China, coupled with Japan’s overextension, allowed the larger, less developed nation to endure throughout World War II. 
  At the same time, China was experiencing an equally brutal civil war between Nationalist and Communist forces, which became inextricably intertwined with the fighting raging across the globe. In fact, the sheer scale of the horrors of the civil war remain hard to believe today, even as action in that theater is often overlooked because of events in Europe. What most people remember about the civil war is that it was ultimately won by Mao Zedong and the Communists, ushering in a new era of Communism in China and exiling the Republic of China’s government to Taiwan. Political tensions between Taiwan and China remain precarious to this day.  
  The Republic of China’s most famous leader and general was Chiang Kai-Shek, who rose from humble origins as the son of a local trader to become, as he liked to remind visitors, the ruler over more people than any other world leader. He certainly became one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century, yet today, he is considerably less well-known than many other figures from that period, which was so rife of chaos and tumultuous change. Chiang had come to power at a time when China was rebuilding itself after a period of internal conflict and turmoil, attempting to unify the nation in the face of the Japanese and the man who would become his arch-rival: Mao Zedong, leader of the Chinese Communists.  
  These ideological - and military - conflicts would decide the fate of Asia's biggest country going forward.
