Sinopse

"Status and Honor" explores the intricate relationship between social standing and perceived integrity across diverse cultures and historical periods. It argues that the dynamic interplay between status, one's position in a social hierarchy, and honor, an individual's perceived worthiness, profoundly influences social structures and individual behavior. The book examines how societies construct status systems based on factors like wealth and lineage, and how varied honor codes, such as warrior ethos or family reputation, manifest. Understanding this interplay is crucial for comprehending power dynamics, social cohesion, and conflict within human societies. This book navigates these complex concepts by drawing on a wide range of case studies, from feudal Europe to modern tribal societies, providing a comprehensive overview.

It highlights intriguing facts, such as how adherence to a code of honor can elevate one's status, or conversely, how social standing can dictate moral conduct. The book also examines the historical evolution of status systems, cultural variations in honor codes, and the consequences of their interaction, demonstrating how these concepts shape social mobility, political stability, and intergroup relations.

The book's value lies in its emphasis on the dynamic interplay between status and honor, rather than treating them as separate concepts. It progresses by first introducing core concepts and then developing them through major sections, including the historical evolution of status systems and cultural variations in honor codes. It concludes by considering the contemporary relevance of status and honor in shaping modern social movements and political ideologies.

What does it mean to be cosmopolitan? Typically, cosmopolitanism is understood as a broad moral orientation, involving some kind of commitment to global moral equality. On this understanding, to be cosmopolitan is simply to evidence that moral orientation oneself. By contrast, Being Cosmopolitan takes up a thoroughly political approach. The focus is on what it might mean, and what it is like, to be political in a distinctly cosmopolitan form. What it means to be cosmopolitan in this thoroughly political sense cannot involve appeal to any particular moral orientation, because politics is about, inter alia, the contestation of such orientations and commitments. Instead, this book offers an account that is based upon the internalization of particular kind of global "social imaginary," involving the imagination of a global public to which certain issues—or global public affairs—are understood to pertain.

Within which kind of global order is it possible, or comfortable, for a cosmopolitical agent to live? In answer to this question, the book argues against the viability of both a world of self-determining peoples, and of "pluralist" global visions—both of which are popular with moral cosmopolitan theorists.

LGBTQ+ people have more options than ever before when it comes to starting a family, but a lack of both focused information and mainstream representation can leave parents, prospective parents, friends, and relatives in the dark.

Authors Lotte Jeffs and Stu Oakley spoke to dozens of experts and queer families, and this hugely needed book is the product of those conversations and their own experiences of becoming parents through IUI and adoption respectively.

Ninety percent of queer parenting is just . . . parenting but being LGBTQ+ when you're a parent does bring with it a host of conundrums that mainstream guides—which tend to assume heterosexuality—do not address.

From adoption, surrogacy, fertility treatment, and other routes to parenthood, to donors, trans parenting, how to deal with family-focused homophobia, coming out at the school gates, and much more, The Queer Parent is a groundbreaking toolkit for LGBTQ+ parents, parents-to-be, and anyone looking to support their journey. It is a book that redefines the family for the modern age.

For the seventy-fifth anniversary of 1984, Laura Beers explores George Orwell's still-radical ideas and why they are critical today.

George Orwell devoted his career to exposing social injustice and political duplicity, urging his readers to face hard truths about Western society and politics. Now, the uncanny parallels between the interwar era and our own—rising inequality, censorship, and challenges to traditional social hierarchies—make his writing even more of the moment. In Orwell's Ghosts, historian Laura Beers considers Orwell's full body of work—his six novels, three nonfiction works, as well as his brilliant essays—to examine what "Orwellian" means and to take it out of the hands of political pundits. She explores how Orwell's writing on free speech addresses the proliferation of "fake news," highlights his vivid critiques of capitalism, and, in contrast, analyzes his failure to understand feminism. Timely, wide-ranging, and thought-provoking, Orwell's Ghosts investigates how the writings of a lionized champion of truth and freedom can help us face the crises of modernity.
