Sinopse

Lake Power Flows explores the profound effects of hydroelectric development on the Cree communities in Northern Canada. It examines how the pursuit of renewable energy, specifically hydroelectricity, has reshaped Indigenous lives and landscapes, often with unforeseen consequences. The book illuminates the intricate relationship between energy policy, environmental change, and Indigenous self-determination, revealing that while hydroelectricity is often seen as a clean energy source, its development has significantly altered the Cree's traditional way of life.

The book traces the history of hydroelectric projects, like the James Bay Project, from the mid-20th century, detailing the political and economic factors driving their construction. It also delves into the environmental and social repercussions, such as altered water levels impacting fish populations and the displacement of communities from ancestral lands.

Through historical accounts, scientific data, and personal stories, Lake Power Flows provides a balanced perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous communities, highlighting their efforts to negotiate agreements, assert land rights, and preserve their culture.

The book progresses by first introducing the Cree and their land relationship, then examining the planning and construction of hydroelectric projects. Later chapters analyze environmental and social impacts, culminating in an analysis of the Cree response, using archival documents, government reports, and oral histories. This approach offers a nuanced understanding of the complex issues at the intersection of renewable energy, Indigenous rights, and environmental stewardship.

In January of 1862, Grant persuaded General Henry “Old Brains” Halleck to allow his men to launch a campaign on the Tennessee River. As soon as Halleck acquiesced, Grant moved against Fort Henry, in close coordination with the naval command of Flag Officer Andrew Hull Foote. The combination of infantry and naval bombardment helped force the capitulation of Fort Henry on February 6, 1862, and the surrender of Fort Henry was followed immediately by an attack on Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River, which earned Grant his famous nickname “Unconditional Surrender”. Grant’s forces enveloped the Confederate garrison at Fort Donelson, which included Confederate generals Simon Buckner, John Floyd, and Gideon Pillow. In one of the most bungled operations of the war, the Confederate generals tried and failed to open an escape route by attacking Grant’s forces on February 15. Although the initial assault was successful, General Pillow inexplicably chose to have his men pull back into their trenches, ostensibly so they could take more supplies before their escape. Instead, they simply lost all the ground they had taken, and the garrison was cut off yet again.
During the early morning hours of February 16, the garrison’s generals held one of the Civil War’s most famous councils of war. Over the protestations of cavalry officer Nathan Bedford Forrest, who insisted the garrison could escape, the three generals agreed to surrender their army, but none of them wanted to be the fall guy. General Floyd was worried that the Union might try him for treason if he was taken captive, so he turned command of the garrison over to General Pillow and escaped with two of his regiments. Pillow had the same concern and turned command over to General Buckner before escaping. Despite all of these successful escapes, General Buckner decided to surrender to Grant, and when asked for terms of surrender, Grant replied, “No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender.”

Once designed to amplify the voices of farmers, laborers, and the underrepresented, the Philippine party-list system has now become the ultimate low-risk, high-reward investment for the well-connected. In Partylist for Profit: How the Rich Hijacked a System for the Poor, A.A. Castor peels back the glossy surface of legislative charity to expose the machinery of legalized profiteering, dynastic expansion, and quiet political laundering.
With deadpan seriousness and a dose of dark humor, this book walks readers through the insider's playbook of how to build, fund, and quietly control a party-list with as little accountability—and as much profit—as possible. From choosing a vague advocacy ("OFWs" or "transport workers," anyone?) to securing alphabet-friendly names for ballot advantage, to recycling nominees across election cycles and repackaging greed as governance, this is not a how-to—this is a how-it's-done.
Perfect for political junkies, aspiring operators, or just disillusioned citizens looking to finally understand why nothing ever changes, Partylist for Profit isn't just a book—it's a public service announcement disguised as satire.
Learn how power is bought, maintained, and quietly passed down—not through revolution, but registration. After all, in today's politics, you don't need a platform. You just need a seat.

    WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?
Every time another American law enforcement officer is hurt or killed doing something odd, this is the first thing that comes to my mind. If you are thinking of going into law enforcement, already an officer, or are a friend or family member of one and want some insight into the mindset such an individual needs to have, this book was written for you.
I won’t make any promises that this book will make you or them the safest cop on the streets. I wish I could, but none of us even know whether we have the next five minutes until we take our last breath. That doesn’t mean we should live our lives in fear, nor should we live like our lives don’t matter. My intention in writing this book is to help save lives by giving a different perspective of what it means to be a cop, using humor when possible.
What I will promise the reader is this: I will always tell you the truth, to the best of my knowledge.
    — Don P. Price
Incidents in this book are real events that happened very much as written, either to the author or one of his co-workers. Anyone who has an interest in the safety and well-being of law enforcement officers (LEOs), and their relationships with their friends and families, will have a better grasp of why they behave like they do. Dealing daily with strangers having one of the worst days of their lives takes a toll on these exceptional individuals. Having a certain mindset can make all the difference towards them making it home in one piece at the end of the day...and emotionally surviving to do it all again tomorrow. If you haven't a clue what it means to be a LEO, but simply want to get a glimpse behind the badge- if you want to share the adventure and boredom, the humor and the sadness, the fear and the anxiety these folks experience on any given day, then you should listen to this book!

    The Shortest History of...

Outsiders have long viewed Scandinavia as special, starting with the ancient Greeks and their myths of Ultima Thule, a place "where the Sun goes to rest." Today, we admire Scandinavia for its universal welfare, equality, peacefulness, and untouched nature—not to mention its interior design, crime literature, and love of all things hygge.

Yet Nordic history has its hardships and dark periods, too: pandemics, war, the expansionism of the Viking Age and the eighteenth century, alliances with Nazi Germany in World War II, and a eugenics movement in the twentieth century.

In The Shortest History of Scandinavia, historian Mart Kuldkepp masterfully sketches the outlines of Scandinavia's rich history—from the first known peoples of the region, who followed the ice sheet north at the end of the last Ice Age, to the Scandinavians living in nations that are among the happiest in the world today.

In this deeply insightful volume, Kuldkepp illuminates the concept of "Nordicness"—a hard-to-define quality that has nonetheless steered the region to respond to major challenges, actively shaping its history and exerting a considerable influence on European and global history in the process.
