The outcome of the Civil War changed dramatically in this alternate history, with the South emerging victorious. The Confederacy’s early victories redefined the course of the conflict and set the stage for a dramatically different future. One of the key factors in the South’s triumph was the strategic advantage gained in the opening years of the war. With superior military leadership, especially from General Robert E. Lee, the Confederacy was able to exploit the Union’s weaknesses and win crucial battles that would eventually shift the momentum in their favor. The Battle of Gettysburg, for instance, saw Confederate forces turning the tide of battle in their favor. With the Union forces retreating, the South captured key northern territories, including Washington D.C., which became a symbol of Confederate dominance.
The impact of foreign intervention was another pivotal factor in the war's new direction. European powers, particularly Great Britain and France, had long been sympathetic to the Southern cause due to economic interests, primarily the cotton trade. With the Union struggling, European nations were more inclined to recognize the Confederacy, and this recognition provided them with military and financial support. In this alternate timeline, the Confederacy was not only able to win vital battles but also secure crucial international recognition, which solidified its independence.
A key turning point in this reimagined history occurred when the South succeeded in capturing Washington, D.C. After several key victories, the Union’s capital fell into Confederate hands. This was a symbolic and strategic blow to the Union cause. Without the political and military heart of the nation, the North was thrown into disarray. President Abraham Lincoln, unable to maintain control, was forced to negotiate a peace settlement. The Confederate States of America, led by President Jefferson Davis, could now dictate the terms of the peace and its future.

Oliver Cromwell is one of the most important men in England’s history, but everything he struggled for collapsed within two decades of his death. The army, Parliament and the citizens of London grappled with each other for control of the country, and even the army no longer remained a united political force. Civil war almost broke out again as a force under Lambert failed to prevent General Monck, the military governor of Scotland, from marching south and dissolving the Rump Parliament. Excluded MPs were restored on condition that they themselves dissolve Parliament, and following fresh elections without military intervention, a new Parliament met on April 25, 1660. Dominated by Presbyterians and Royalists, it accepted a settlement offered by the man titling himself Charles II, the son and heir of Charles I. On May 25, 1660, Charles II returned to England, and less than two years after Cromwell’s death, his work was undone by the Restoration. King Charles II heaped ignominy upon defeat by having Cromwell’s body dug up and posthumously executed. Cromwell’s body was then decapitated, as was Ireton’s, and their heads were placed on a pike above Westminster Hall, where Charles I had been tried, for several years.
Despite the Restoration, however, and despite the fact England’s republican experiment barely outlasted Cromwell, the Commonwealth and Restoration were hugely important in asserting the power of Parliament, and it permanently shifted England’s political balance firmly towards a constitutional monarchy limited by Parliament. The Stuart monarchy was restored on condition of compromise with Parliament and the army, and a precedent had been set for Parliament to replace the monarch, a precedent it would follow in the 1680s when James II was replaced by William and Mary in a settlement that set even more limits around the monarch.

Jerusalem is one of the world’s oldest cities, with a history that stretches back thousands of years. Over the course of its existence, it has been invaded 52 times, seized and regained 44 times, besieged 23 times, and destroyed twice. The oldest portion of the city dates back to the 4th millennium BCE, making it not only a significant historical center but also a symbol of resilience and conflict. Its role in the ancient world has been central to the development of various cultures, religions, and empires that have passed through the region, contributing to its complex and contested history.
Given the city’s profound significance in both Israeli and Palestinian national identities, the interpretation of its long history is often influenced by ideological predispositions. For Israeli nationalists, the Jewish eras of Jerusalem’s past are paramount, as they claim continuity with the ancient Israelites and view their connection to the city as a fundamental part of their modern identity. This narrative emphasizes the city’s historical importance to the Jewish people, highlighting key moments such as the establishment of the First Temple and the city’s central role in Jewish religious and cultural life.
