Sinopse

Auto Industry Slumps examines the drastic decline of the U.S. auto industry from 1929 to 1932, mirroring the broader economic crisis of the Great Depression. The book argues that the auto industry’s 75% production drop wasn't isolated but a symptom of deeper economic weaknesses. It explores the interplay of factors like reduced consumer demand, constrained credit availability, and significant manufacturing overcapacity, all while considering the limited impact of government policies at the time. Intriguingly, the Roaring Twenties, with its easy credit and booming auto sales, masked underlying vulnerabilities like market saturation and wealth inequality, setting the stage for the slump.

The book progresses by first establishing the pre-Depression context and then dissecting the causes of the decline, dedicating a chapter to the social consequences in automotive hubs like Detroit. A unique aspect is its analysis of previously unexamined records from smaller automakers. By focusing on a specific industry, the book provides valuable insights into broader economic forces and the potential for cascading failures during economic downturns. The analysis connects economic trends with social history and political science, offering a nuanced understanding of this pivotal moment.

Hear an actual cylinder recording of Harry Houdini: "...Ladies and gentlemen. Introducing my original invention, the Water Torture Cell. Although there is nothing supernatural about it, I am willing to proffer the sum of $1,000.00 to anyone who can prove that it is possible to consume air inside of the Torture Cell when I'm locked up in it in the regulation manner after it has been filled with water. Should anything go wrong when I'm locked up, one of my assistants walks through the curtains, ready to rush in, demolishing the glass, allowing the water to flow out, in order to save my life.
    - I, Houdini, October 29, 1914, Flatbush, NY."

Harry Houdini, born Erich Weisz; March 24, 1874 - October 31, 1926) was a Hungarian-birn American escape artist, magic man, and stunt performer, noted for his escape acts. His pseudonym is a reference to his spiritual master, French magician Robert-Houdin (1805–1871).

“Absolutely unique — a book made for constant use and a companion for life" "I have never found a book that contains such a multitude of wise rules for the conduct of life.” - Arthur Schopenhauer
“Europe has never produced anything more subtle in matters of moral knowledge" "Such a book should be every thinking person’s constant companion, read slowly, weighed ounce by ounce.” - Friedrich Nietzsche
“[Gracian was] the great cartographer of the interior life” - José Ortega y Gasset

In the courts of seventeenth-century Spain, a Jesuit priest distilled a lifetime of sharp observation into 300 maxims on prudence, strategy, and self‑mastery that became a sensation across Europe, with lasting influence over the centuries. Originally published in 1647 as Oráculo Manual y Arte de Prudencia, this collection of aphorisms and their commentaries was intended to offer guidance on how to live fully, advance socially, and become a better person. Drawing on careful study of statesmen and those in positions of power, Gracián crafted maxims that offer profound insight into the art of living and the practice of achieving. His secular moral reflections on reality and appearances, self-love and friendship, wit and ignorance are pragmatic, spiritual, prudent, and discreet.

Together the maxims form a durable, tested companion to decision‑making and practical judgment, on how to cultivate inner substance, read others’ intentions without prejudice, and protect one’s energy from futile conflicts. Voltaire praised it for its astute observations on human nature, and Schopenhauer translated it into German, hailing it as his pocket oracle and introducing it to a new audience. It is said to have accompanied Winston Churchill on the voyage that took him to the Boer War, and André Gide was among those who admired the French edition.

Learning to communicate and manage frustration is part of growing up. But some children don’t master those skills. Suppose their frequent angry outbursts and aggressive behaviors interfere with family life, making friends, or school performance. In that case, they may have the oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), which, by some estimates, affects up to 16 percent of school-age children. Though no statistics are available for younger children, experts say that most children with ODD show signs of the disorder in the preschool years.Oppositional defiant disorder describes a pattern of angry/irritable mood, argumentative/defiant behavior, and/or spitefulness that lasts at least six months in multiple settings. It occurs almost daily in children younger than 5 and at least once a week in older children. (By 6 or 7, most children have learned to express anger in productive, socially acceptable ways.)Examples of anger and irritable mood include frequent loss of temper and being easily annoyed or resentful. Argumentative and defiant behavior includes refusing to obey rules, continually challenging authority, being deliberately annoying to others, and/or blaming others for mistakes or bad behavior. He says that many children with ODD have other mental health challenges, such as anxiety, mood disorders, and language and learning disorders. Trauma, parenting, styles, and other environmental issues may also contribute. As with many mental health conditions, ODD occurs on a continuum. Children with mild ODD may show symptoms only at home or only at school. Moderate ODD may be the diagnosis when a child’s ODD behaviors happen in two settings. ODD is classified as severe when the acting out is seen in three or more locations.
