    On 1st February 1963, Eileen and her family migrated from England to Australia. Leaving behind a close knit family and many treasured memories. They sailed on a ship to a land of blue skies, sunshine and vast horizons. 
  In `Day Dream Believers’ we follow Eileen and her families journey from the migrant town of Elizabeth West to the top end of Australia. Eileen comes from an Irish, Catholic background. Their family life in Elizabeth West in Adelaide is described in loving detail. It’s the era of the hoola hoop, the yo-yo, skipping ropes, marbles, and go-karts. 
  Her Dad would say,  
  ‘The Irish are all born to wonder, they are poets and dreamers……..’ 
  Forever searching for a better life and a place to belong, they leave Elizabeth West to live in Darwin. 
  ‘The breeze made its way through the louvres, but inside the house the air was still and warm. I could hear the clicking sound of a gecko and watched as it scurried up along the wall. The streetlight made patterns on the louvres. I could hear a few voices, the stragglers, keeping their beers company as the night drifted by.’ 
  We see the family surrounded by the culture of the time, pop songs, fashions, TV shows, and eventually Germaine Greer who ‘invited me to “taste my own menstrual blood.” It took guts, but when I did, I tasted power. It was not a burden.  
  And now, with blood dripping from my fingers, I smear the words: 
  “You cannot defeat me.” ’ 
  The 1970`s was the dawning of a new era, where the collective voices of many stood in defiance against the social norms of the day. 
  Eileen`s thoughtfully crafted memoir with it`s poignant insights of family life, simmering in the background of these ever changing turbulent times.

  The son of a lawyer blinded in World War I, he describes the parallel universe in which his bourgeois family lived in Leipzig. He vividly writes about the night when his home was bombed out. He had to guide his father over puddles of green flames caused by phosphor to his grandmother's apartment where he discovered hours later that — of all people — Frenchmen had rescued his mother from the flames. He tells the story of how he stole a tram after an air raid, and how his family buried his grand-aunt's right hand because that was the only body part rescuers found under the rubble after her house was hit by a blockbuster bomb.
  
  Dr. Siemon-Netto, a journalist and academic, relates how in a country parsonage he was evacuated to, the pro-Nazi pastor beat him up for using French loan words and how he preached on Sundays that Hitler was Germany's saviour, prompting the courageous organist to whisper into the author's ears: "He's lying! He is betraying our Lord!"
  
  When the Americans occupied Leipzig on Hitler's birthday in 1945, the author's family feasted on half an egg in mustard sauce each.
  Urchin at War is an Ode to Omi, his funny and intrepid grandmother Clara Netto, a grande dame who in the air raid shelter taught him basic Lutheran doctrine so well that it led him to interrupt his stellar career as a reporter at age 50 to study theology in Chicago and earn a doctorate in Boston.
  Urchin at War is the first volume in the 1517 Publishing's Urchin Series about the  extraordinary life story of a kid and high school dropout who became a sought-after newsman, who covered the Kennedy assassination and the Vietnam War, and ended up being a Lutheran lay theologian.

  Professor Frank P. Varney examines Grant's relationship with three noted Civil War generals: the brash and uncompromising "Fighting Joe" Hooker; George H. Thomas, the commander who earned the sobriquet "Rock of Chickamauga"; and Gouverneur Kemble Warren, who served honorably in every major action of the Army of the Potomac before being relieved less than two weeks before Appomattox. 
   
   
   
  Dr. Varney had studied the tempestuous relationship between Grant and Union General William S. Rosecrans. During the war, Rosecrans was considered to be on par with Grant himself; today, he is largely forgotten. Rosecrans's star dimmed, argues Varney, because Grant orchestrated the effort. Grant used official reports, interviews with the press, and his memoirs to influence how future generations would remember the war and his part in it. Aided greatly by his two terms as president, his memoirs, and the dramatic backdrop against which those memoirs were written, our historical memory has been influenced to a degree greater than many realize.
