Following the end of the First World War, Poland was wedged uncomfortably between the two dominant nations of Germany and the Soviet Union. Poland was obliged to plot and negotiate to try and prevent them from realizing their ambitions to eviscerate the country.

As well as bitter ethnic battles between Germany and Poland for the political control of Upper Silesia, there were also the burning ambitions of Weimar Germany, and later Nazi Germany, to reclaim lands incorporated into the new state of Poland at Versailles.

Despite America's initial support, the US thereafter showed little interest in Poland's predicament. While France was a traditional friend to the Polish peoples, its political influence over eastern European affairs weakened.

The emergence of Hitler and the Nazis in Germany did little to bring the countries together. This drove them further apart as the Führer ramped up his rhetorical assault on the perceived injustices of Versailles.

London and Paris found themselves in the disagreeable position of seeing no option but to throw their whole weight behind the integrity of the Polish state if they were ever going to make any sort of stand against Nazi aggression.

In Civic Gifts, Elisabeth S. Clemens takes a singular approach to probing the puzzle that is the United States. How, she asks, did a powerful state develop within an anti-statist political culture? How did a sense of shared nationhood develop despite the linguistic, religious, and ethnic differences among settlers and, eventually, citizens? Clemens reveals that an important piece of the answer to these questions can be found in the unexpected political uses of benevolence and philanthropy, practices of gift-giving and reciprocity that coexisted uneasily with the self-sufficient independence expected of liberal citizens Civic Gifts focuses on the power of gifts not only to mobilize communities throughout US history, but also to create new forms of solidarity among strangers. Clemens makes clear how, from the early Republic through the Second World War, reciprocity was an important tool for eliciting both the commitments and the capacities needed to face natural disasters, economic crises, and unprecedented national challenges. Encompassing a range of endeavors from the mobilized voluntarism of the Civil War, through Community Chests and the Red Cross to the FDR-driven rise of the March of Dimes, Clemens shows how voluntary efforts were repeatedly articulated with government projects.  The legacy of these efforts is a state co-constituted with, as much as constrained by, civil society.

Critical thinking is the disciplined process of actively analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing information to make reasoned judgments and decisions. It involves a systematic approach to thinking that seeks to uncover underlying assumptions, assess the validity of arguments, and apply logical reasoning to complex problems.

At its core, critical thinking is about being intellectually autonomous and reflective. It requires individuals to question and scrutinize their own beliefs, the arguments presented by others, and the evidence supporting those arguments. Critical thinkers do not accept information at face value; instead, they engage in a process of inquiry that involves several key components.

Analysis involves breaking down complex information into its constituent parts to understand its structure and relationships. This includes identifying the main arguments, assessing the relevance and quality of evidence, and understanding the context in which information is presented.

Evaluation involves assessing the credibility and strength of arguments and evidence. This requires determining whether the arguments are logically sound, whether the evidence is reliable and pertinent, and whether there are any biases or fallacies affecting the argument.

From the conceptualizer of glimmers—prompts to help you savor the micromoments of joy and well-being in your day.

First coined in Deb Dana's book Polyvagal Theory in Therapy, "glimmers" are the micromoments in your day that spark a sense of joy. They can be anything from catching a view of the skyline to cuddling with your pet. Glimmers tell your nervous system that you are safe and okay in the world, thus shifting your system's response from defense to calm. When we notice and name glimmers, we train our nervous system to be open to more of these moments—expanding our overall sense of well-being.

This beautiful journal provides a framework for listeners to name and savor their glimmers. Expertly crafted prompts encourage listeners to notice various types of glimmers that they might otherwise be unaware of—such as glimmers in nature or in the arts, "every day" glimmers, social glimmers, and even the range of glimmer "flavors." Glimmers Journal is for anyone looking to build a foundation of wellness and regulation.
