Bad Nature - How Rat Control...

Offers insights into the social and cultural implications of humans’ relationships with rats and the natural world. Apart from the occasional pet owner who has rats, most people regard rats as disease-carrying nocturnal pests, scurrying around dumpsters and dragging slices of pizza through New York City subways. Since rats are seemingly omnipresent in human life, why do we harbor such negative feelings about them, and why are they among the creatures most frequently targeted for systematic extermination? In Bad Nature, sociologist Andrew McCumber draws out the cultural underpinnings of rat extermination across three countries and two continents. Drawing from ethnographic, interview, and textual data from the frigid prairie of Alberta, Canada; the heart of downtown Los Angeles, California; and the iconic Galápagos Islands of Ecuador, McCumber studies how humans have sought to suppress and exterminate rat populations in a variety of environmental, social, and political situations. He shows how, in these disparate locations, rat control is a social practice that draws and clarifies the spatial and symbolic boundaries between “good” and “bad” forms of nature. Rats are near the bottom of a symbolic hierarchy of species that places human life at the top, companion animals and majestic wildlife just below them, and the “invasive species” that call for systematic extermination at the very bottom. This hierarchy of living things that places rats at the bottom, McCumber argues, mirrors human systems of social inequalities and power dynamics.  Both original and engaging, Bad Nature urges readers to consider, when charting a just and sustainable future, where will the rats be placed in the worlds we envision?

    The Mandela Effect - Exploring...

The Mandela Effect is a psychological phenomenon in which large groups of people remember an event, fact, or detail differently from documented reality. The term originates from a widespread belief that Nelson Mandela died in prison during the 1980s, despite historical records confirming his release in 1990 and later presidency of South Africa. Since then, the Mandela Effect has come to describe various collective false memories, ranging from misremembered movie quotes to altered brand logos and even significant historical events. While some view it as mere confusion or misinformation, others see it as evidence of alternate realities or shifts in consciousness.
The phenomenon gained widespread recognition through the internet, where individuals began sharing their experiences of remembering things differently than historical records suggest. Social media platforms, online forums, and viral discussions have amplified these false memories, making them more widespread and reinforcing the belief that something unusual is occurring. Many people report feeling unsettled upon discovering that their memories do not align with reality, further fueling speculation about the cause. Some theories suggest that quantum physics, parallel universes, or glitches in reality could be responsible. Others argue that the Mandela Effect is a result of how human memory works, shaped by cognitive biases and external influences.
Memory is not a perfect recording of past events; rather, it is a reconstructive process that can be influenced by suggestion, misinformation, and group reinforcement. Psychological research has shown that memories can be distorted over time, leading to the formation of collective false memories.

The familiar old world of classical music, with its wealthy donors and ornate concert halls, is changing. The patronage of a wealthy few is being replaced by that of corporations, leading to new unions of classical music and contemporary capitalism. In Composing Capital, Marianna Ritchey lays bare the appropriation of classical music by the current neoliberal regime, arguing that artists, critics, and institutions have aligned themselves—and, by extension, classical music itself—with free-market ideology. More specifically, she demonstrates how classical music has lent its cachet to marketing schemes, tech firm-sponsored performances, and global corporate partnerships. As Ritchey shows, the neoliberalization of classical music has put music at the service of contemporary capitalism, blurring the line between creativity and entrepreneurship, and challenging us to imagine how a noncommodified musical practice might be possible in today’s world.
