Sinopse

In "Mother Jones," the seminal figure of labor activism, Mary Harris Jones, shares her compelling journey through the tumultuous landscape of American labor movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book is a powerful combination of autobiographical narrative and socio-political commentary, punctuated by Jones's fierce rhetoric and vivid storytelling. It captures the struggles of industrial workers, particularly focusing on child labor and the exploitation of the working class, situated within the broader context of the Progressive Era. Jones's literary style is impassioned and fiery, mirroring her relentless spirit and commitment to social justice. Mary Harris Jones, known fondly as Mother Jones, was born in 1837 and rose to prominence as a labor organizer, leading strikes and advocating for workers' rights across the United States. Her personal experiences, including the tragic loss of her family and her own battles against exploitation, fueled her activism and shaped her perspectives on social justice. Jones's dedication to the cause of labor rights was both a product of her time and a response to the injustices she witnessed, making her account both personal and historically significant. "Mother Jones" is not merely a reflection of one woman's life; it is a clarion call for workers everywhere. Scholars, activists, and general readers alike will find inspiration in Jones'Äôs relentless pursuit of justice and equality. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the roots of American labor movements and the indomitable spirit of those who fight for workers' rights.

This true story, set in the late 1960s, follows the journey of Kozmos Lovejoy, a young artist living in San Francisco fascinated by psychedelics, spiritual mythology, and Jungian therapy. One night, he dreams of a banquet in a Renaissance castle where he meets a beautiful young woman who seems to know him and a joyous, vibrant man in a toga who blesses the feast with laughter and joy. A few weeks later, while hiking in the jungle near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Koz discovers a spring that flows into a jungle pool. He meets the girl from his dream who shares a spiritual feast of knowledge and wisdom hidden for thousands of years in myths and metaphors buried in books and ancient texts. Thus begins Kozmos Lovejoy's journey of self-discovery, taking him from Puerto Vallarta across the American Southwest and finally high into the French Alps, where he camps with the Sufis and shares in this Feast of Knowledge. Here, the secret of stardust is revealed to him, and he gains a deeper understanding of this transformative period of awakening global consciousness. The Adventures of Kozmos Lovejoy, Exp is an epic adventure that blends Patrick O'Brien's personal experiences with a profound understanding of human potential. It celebrates a remarkable journey of self-awareness, inspiring the hearts, dreams, and imagination of those who dare surrender to the unknown by choice or chance.

A moving and deeply personal excavation of Indigenous beauty and passion in a suffering world

In prose that is evocative and sensual, unabashedly queer and visceral, raw and autobiographical, Joshua Whitehead writes of an Indigenous body in pain, coping with trauma. Deeply rooted within, he reaches across the anguish to create a new form of storytelling he calls "biostory"—beyond genre, and entirely sovereign. Through this narrative perspective, Making Love with the Land recasts mental health struggles and our complex emotional landscapes from a nefarious parasite on his (and our) well-being to kin, even a relation, no matter what difficulties they present to us. Whitehead ruminates on loss and pain without shame or ridicule but rather highlights waypoints for personal transformation. Written in the aftermath of heartbreak, before and during the pandemic, Making Love with the Land illuminates this present moment in which both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people are rediscovering old ways and creating new ones about connection with and responsibility toward each other and the land.

Intellectually audacious and emotionally compelling, Whitehead shares his devotion to the world in which we live and brilliantly—even joyfully—maps his experience on the land that has shaped stories, histories, and bodies from time immemorial.

This is a true African tale of persistence and tenacity.
The story of a farmer and pilot raised in colonial Kenya who went on to play an active role in Mozambican politics whilst leading Lonrho’s foreign investment in that country. This unique memoir describes life during Mozambique’s transition from communism to democracy, from poverty to an investor’s choice. It has been a life creating farms, gold mining, and operating hotels through war and peace. Then supporting peasant farmers and developing the conservation of a private tropical island.
It is proof that nothing is impossible and Africa offers opportunity to those who persist. It is a personal record of the changes in modern Africa and Mozambique in particular an investor’s destination.
