Lafcadio Hearn was born on the 27th June 1850 on the Ionian isle of Levkás in Greece to a British Army officer and a Greek Mother.

His father, fearing for his career prospects at being married to a Greek Orthodox wife, sent them to Dublin whilst he continued to advance his career with further postings. Life there was difficult for mother and son. His father returned, wounded and traumatised, when Lafcadio was three. He annulled the marriage and she remarried but had to give up care of Lafcadio to her sister-in law.

After brief periods for Catholic education in England and France he emigrated to Ohio in the United States when he was 19, taking on a series of casual jobs before embarking on a career as a journalist, publishing poems and essays in Cincinnati. It was whilst here that he began a side-line in translating, starting with Gautier and Flaubert. He married in 1874 to a 20 year old African-American woman in violation of Ohio's anti-miscegenation law. The marriage soon failed.

In 1877 he relocated to New Orleans to write on a variety of themes before picking up a two year assignment from Harper’s to write in the West Indies, where he also wrote his first novel.

In 1890 Harper’s sent him to Japan. Here he left journalism and took the remarkable decision to become a schoolteacher in the north of Japan. Enraptured by the culture he was driven to explain it in various Western publications to those who had little, if any, knowledge of its culture. Within the year he had fallen in love with, and married, a high-born Japanese lady, together they would have four children.

In 1895 he became a Japanese national and took the name Koizumi Yakumo, Koizumi being his wife’s family name.

The following few years, whilst a professor of Literature at the Imperial University of Japan, were his most creative and admired period.

Lafcadio Hearn died of heart failure on the 26th of September 1904, in Tokyo, Japan shortly before leaving to deliver a series of lectures at Cornell University in New York State. He was 54.

This book portrays a closely-knit group of people living in the north Tipperary hills during the early 20th century - a community largely made up of small farmers, whose lives were far different from today. The book's inspiration comes from writers such as Thomas Hardy and attempts to pass on to readers the lyrical and rich phrasings of Tipperary's old hill folk and capture the spiritual wealth of an age that remained unchanged for several centuries.
Tales of . . . brotherly love and hate, a rogue's return from across the sea and his efforts to reform, an unexpected first-love at the harvest-time dance-in-the-fields, persecution of two old saints at the hands of misguided youth, sports-day activities for adults and children alike following the arduous channelling of a new stream, two adventurous toddlers getting lost in the wilderness but saved by a witch, and more.
'Lovers of literature will find themselves engrossed in the lives of a past hillside community.' Addison & Cole

From Oklahoma to California, the heroes of A Calm & Normal Heart are modern-day adventurers—seeking out new places to call their own inside a nation to which they do not entirely belong. A member of the Osage tribe, author Chelsea T. Hicks's stories are compelled by an overlooked diaspora happening inside America itself: that of young Native people.

In stories like "Superdrunk," "Tsexope," and "Wets'a," iPhone lifestyles comingle with ancestral connection, strengthening relationships or pushing people apart, while generational trauma haunts individual paths. Broken partnerships and polyamorous desire signal a fraught era of modern love, even as old ways continue to influence how people assess compatibility. And in "By Alcatraz," a Native student finds herself alone on campus over Thanksgiving break, seeking out new friendships during a national holiday she does not recognize. Leaping back in time, "A Fresh Start Ruined" inhabits the life of Florence, an Osage woman attempting to hide her origins while social climbing in mid-century Oklahoma. And in "House of RGB" a young professional settles into a new home, intent on claiming her independence after a breakup, even if her ancestors can't seem to get out of her way.

    Author: M. R. James
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1904
    Public Domain: Yes
    Description:
The Mezzotint is a classic supernatural tale by M. R. James, masterfully blending quiet academic realism with mounting, inescapable terror.
When a curator at a university museum acquires an unusual mezzotint engraving for the institution’s collection, the artwork initially appears unremarkable — bleak, old-fashioned, and faintly unpleasant. Yet as the scholars studying it begin to examine the image more closely, they discover something deeply unsettling: the picture does not remain the same.
With each viewing, subtle changes emerge within the scene, revealing movements and details that no engraving should possibly contain. What begins as mild curiosity soon gives way to growing alarm, as the observers realize they may be witnessing the unfolding of a dreadful and unnatural event trapped within the artwork itself.
Rather than relying on shock or spectacle, M. R. James builds fear through implication, atmosphere, and the intrusion of the impossible into the ordinary routines of scholarly life. The Mezzotint remains one of the defining works of English ghost fiction — an eerie, intelligent, and deeply unnerving story where the stillness of an image conceals a gathering horror.
