Sinopsis

In "Demonology and Devil Lore," Moncure D. Conway embarks on an exhaustive exploration of the conceptualizations of evil and the supernatural across various cultures and epochs. Through a meticulous synthesis of historical texts, folklore, and religious doctrines, Conway artfully dissects the evolution of the demonological narrative, illustrating how societal fears and moral beliefs shape our understanding of the devil. His literary style is marked by its erudition, employing a rich vocabulary and a critical lens that invites readers to ponder the intersection of humanity and its shadowy counterparts. This work holds particular significance as it reflects late 19th-century intellectual currents, where scientific skepticism was beginning to contest orthodox religious beliefs, thus enriching its context within the broader discourse of supernatural studies. Moncure D. Conway, an American transcendentalist and social reformer, was deeply influenced by his background and the tumultuous socio-political climate of his time. Born into a Virginia family with strong ties to the abolitionist movement, he wrestled with the moral implications of society's constructs, ultimately channeling his inquiries into this comprehensive examination of demonology. His diverse interests, which spanned philosophy, science, and theology, provide a profound backdrop to this work, allowing for a multidimensional perspective that speaks to both the historical and personal. For readers intrigued by the complexities of belief systems and the historical underpinnings of superstition, "Demonology and Devil Lore" is an indispensable addition to the discourse on evil's place in human experience. Conway's work not only contributes to our understanding of demonology but also serves as a poignant reflection on the darker aspects of cultural identity. It is a compelling invitation to reassess our own beliefs and fears in light of the vast tapestry of human thought.

Little did Evan know his suicide attempt would not be a disappearing into a void but the beginning of a journey to repentance and faith. Long suffering from alcoholism and depression, college sophomore Evan Esco hoped to escape his pain by committing suicide. Evan hoped he would simply cease to be, but he did not count on the existence of God to foil his plans. Instead of wrath, God is now giving Evan the chance to repent—that is, the chance to return to the world above, turn from his sins, and place his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. But if Evan is to learn what it means to repent, he must first travel through the realms of the Inferno—Hell—and speak with those condemned. There, by interviewing shades and demons, some you may find familiar, Evan will learn why he must turn from his sins, look to Christ as his Savior, and trust in God to save him from such a realm.

We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance. – Romans 5:3It is as much our interest as it is our duty to be awakened out of our pleasant but most pernicious drowsiness. Troubles will be so much more sinking and intolerable if they take us by surprise. Just as expectation spoils earthly comforts by sucking out much of its sweetness beforehand so that we find less in it when we come to the actual enjoyment, so the expectation of suffering eases much of the dread and terror by accustoming our thoughts beforehand and making preparation for them. If prepared, we do not find suffering so grievous, overwhelming, and intolerable when it does come.It is not the design of this book to frighten anyone with imaginary dangers, much less to sow jealousies or stir up discontentment for the times. But, it is lamentable that the tokens of God’s anger produce in most of us no fruit other than bold censures and loud clamors rather than humiliation for our own sins and the due preparation to take up our own cross and follow Christ in His suffering. The only goal of this book is to provide a better understand of the purpose and function of suffering for the sake of Christ. Should we not be of those who sincerely resolve and prepare to be followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises (Hebrews 6:12) and take them for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience (James 5:10)?About the AuthorJohn Flavel (c.1628-1691) was born into an England wracked by political, social, and religious upheaval. Two civil wars and unstable leadership framed the political landscape. Economic hardships and a resurgence of plague further distressed the nation. The church, too, was in turmoil. Flavel, a pastor of one of the many independent churches persecuted by the government, was forced from his church in Dartmouth. In secret and under stress, he continued preaching, writing, and shepherding his flock. He suffered the death of three of his four

The Best Way to Find Meaning in Life Is to Get Honest About Death
Life expectancy worldwide is twice what it was a hundred years ago. And because of modern medicine, many of us don't often see death up close. That makes it easy to live as if death is someone else's problem. Ignoring the certainty of death doesn't protect us from feeling its effects throughout the lives we're living now—but it does hold us back from experiencing the powerful, everyday relevance of Jesus's promises to us. So long as death remains remote and unreal, Jesus's promises will too. But honesty about death brings hope to life. That's the ironic claim at the heart of this book. Cultivating death awareness helps us bring the promises of Jesus from the hazy clouds of some other world into the everyday realities of our world, where they belong.
