Sinopsis

Molière's 'The Miser' is a masterful satire that delves into the themes of greed and human folly with sharp wit and comedic brilliance. Set in 17th-century France, this three-act play showcases Molière's unique ability to intertwine humorous dialogue with profound social commentary, effectively critiquing the bourgeois obsession with wealth. The character of Harpagon, an excessively miserly father, exemplifies the absurdities of avarice, revealing Molière's keen insight into the human condition while crafting a play that resonates with audiences across time and culture. The rich theatricality and farcical elements characteristic of Molière's style make 'The Miser' both entertaining and thought-provoking, showcasing the playwright's expertise in character development and dialogue. Molière, born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin in 1622, emerged as one of France's most celebrated playwrights and an influential figure in the evolution of comedic theater. His personal experiences with societal norms and the affluent bourgeoisie undoubtedly influenced his portrayal of characters like Harpagon. Molière's own struggles in the realm of theater, particularly his disdain for pretension and his advocacy for realism, shaped his comedic lens, allowing him to critique social norms while entertaining audiences. Readers looking for an insightful exploration of the follies of human nature through the lens of comedy will find 'The Miser' indispensable. Molière's timeless humor and social critique serve as a reminder of the perils of greed and the absurdity that often accompanies the human desire for wealth. This play not only guarantees laughter but also challenges readers to reflect on their own relationships with money and morality.

    War Is Kind (Collection)

Published in 1899, just a year before his death, War Is Kind by Stephen Crane evokes again the dark imagery of war which made his fortune in The Red Badge Of Courage. Unlike that book, this collection leaves the battlefield itself behind to explore the damage war does to people’s hearts and minds. Reeking of dashed hopes, simultaneously sympathetic with the victims of war and cynical about the purposes of war, Crane implicitly criticizes the image of the romantic hero and asks if Love can survive.
The poetic voice is one of an old and wearied soul, stark and disillusioned, which is all the more intriguing since Crane was dead before he reached his 30th birthday. His work calls to mind the Beat Poets of the mid 20th century in its powerful use of language and bleak idiomatic landscape. It is poetry on the cusp of the fin de siècle; echoing the passing age and presaging the newborn century. (Summary by Chip)

Poetry. A form of words that seems so elegantly simple in one verse and so cleverly complex in another. Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us.

Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy.

In the volumes of this series, we take a look at poetry through the prism of individual regions of England, or sometimes more quaintly known as ‘Albion’, or ‘Blighty’, through the centuries of its gloried history.

England, despite its perception of reserve and under-statement has, in reality, strode the global stage at various time in many things, both good and bad, from Empire to long distance running. Here our focus in on its literature. Famed for its fiction and dramas, it is equally admired for its plethora of gifted poets and the dazzling verse which has added so much to its artistic legacy. These classic poets are wonders of their age and of their art. Genius is written in their names.

In this volume the instantly globally recognisable city of London has, for century after century, dominated the country. Its rich history of art, culture and commerce interweave with generation after generation of poets to produce a supremely rich tapestry of undimmed brilliance. Our poets include Alexander Pope, Amy Levy, Edmund Spenser, John Keats, G K Chesterton and a host of others. Genius has many names.
