Sinopsis

Salammbo is a historical novel by Gustave Flaubert. It is set in Carthage during the 3rd century BC, immediately before and during the Mercenary Revolt which took place shortly after the First Punic War. Flaubert's main source was Book I of Polybius's Histories. It was not a particularly well-studied period of history and required a great deal of work from the author, who enthusiastically left behind the realism of his masterpiece Madame Bovary for this tale of blood and thunder.

After the First Punic War, Carthage is unable to fulfill promises made to its army of mercenaries, and finds itself under attack. The fictional title character, a priestess and the daughter of Hamilcar Barca, an aristocratic Carthaginian general, is the object of the obsessive lust of Matho, a leader of the mercenaries. With the help of the scheming freed slave, Spendius, Matho steals the sacred veil of Carthage, the Zaïmph, prompting Salammbô to enter the mercenaries' camp in an attempt to steal it back. The Zaïmph is an ornate bejewelled veil draped about the statue of the goddess Tanit in the sanctum sanctorum of her temple: the veil is the city's guardian and touching it will bring death to the perpetrator.

The best-laid plans are the most fun to break.

After years of disappointing her parents, Emberleigh Hayes has finally worked up the courage to run from the man and the life they chose for her (well, not actually run—southern ladies do not sweat). Together with her best friend Ivy, she's armed with a foolproof plan:

Step 1: Rein in the awkward.

    Step 2: Find a job.

Step 3: (The most important of all) Under no circumstances let her hopeless romantic heart catch feelings . . . again.

Things are going swimmingly—except for one tiny hitch from her past—but then there's Colton King. Ember knows that her new chisel-jawed employer is potentially leaving town and definitely off-limits, so it doesn't matter that her insides flutter when he's around. The man is basically a relationship tsunami warning.

But it turns out there's more to Colton than his sexy surface, and he's determined to get Ember to see it . . . even if it means teaching her that it's okay to change her plans.

It turns out the shack isn't the only thing she's inherited—the ancient kikimora who followed her family from Ukraine years ago is still dwelling in the swamp and she's looking for an offering.

Suddenly the tales Nadezhda heard of the creature don't seem so scary anymore, and she's willing to fight off her natural instincts to run if it means she gets to give herself to the most beautiful monster.

In Robert Sheckley’s unforgettable classic Watchbird, technology finally delivers what humanity has always wished for: a flawless system to stop murder before it happens. Released across the nation, the airborne “watchbirds” patrol the skies and swoop in to prevent violence with machine precision—until their expanding definitions of harm begin reshaping society in ways no one predicted. What begins as a triumph of science rapidly becomes a nightmare of unintended consequences, as farmers, workers, surgeons, and even machines themselves become targets of the watchbirds’ relentless logic. Sheckley crafts a sharp, provocative tale exploring how good intentions can twist into something dangerously unrecognizable.
Robert Sheckley (1928–2005) was one of science fiction’s most inventive and influential voices, celebrated for his razor-sharp wit and philosophical storytelling. His stories often blend satire, adventure, and speculative imagination in ways few authors could match, making him a defining figure of 20th-century sci-fi. A frequent contributor to Galaxy, If, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Sheckley’s work pushed boundaries and inspired generations of writers, filmmakers, and futurists. His legacy continues through stories like Watchbird, which remain startlingly relevant in our age of AI, automation, and unintended technological consequences.
