Sinopse

The poems in Miriam Gamble’s third collection journey surreally through scenes and landscapes at once of the world and of the mind, finding little, as they go, that 'can be claimed self-evident'. By turns uncanny, dark, poignant and uproarious, What Planet sets the individuality of perception and the inventiveness of memory against fixed certainties, probing chaos and madness in a post-truth world. Rhythmically propulsive and dizzyingly inter-connective, Gamble’s new work is as formally adventurous as it is conceptually distinctive, stretching syntax, jumbling the solid and spectral, crossing borders of time and space. Yet this is also a collection pained by loss, and passionate to connect with a life’s 'vacated' corners – even if the act of remembering is as much creation as recovery.

Consciousness and nostalgia in the Swipe Right age

This collection attempts to find poetry, or what Gwendolyn MacEwen once called “a single symmetry,” amid the chaos of 21st-century life. A powerful catalogue of loss and human connection, it considers not only how our identities are formed by places and experiences rooted in childhood, but also by digital newsfeeds, YouTube, and the “gospel of Spotify.” These poems intimately confront topics as diverse as quantum physics, video arcades, mental illness, climate change, road rage, alcoholism, endangered species, and even a gigantic Noah’s Ark replica.

Chris Banks is a poet known for packing his lines with thought and feeling. Building on the generous work of John Koethe, Larry Levis, and Ada Limón, Banks’s wildly expansive, often lyric, deeply accessible poems are brilliant meditations on what it means to be human in a brave new world of cloud computing and smart phones.

Poetry has over the centuries grouped poets or poems into many different themes and movements.

Amongst its most unusual movements are the English wordsmiths, The Silver Poets.

This select band lived during the sixteenth century reign of Queen Elizabeth 1st. Amongst their storied ranks were Sir Thomas Wyatt, Sir Philip Sidney, Henry Howard, the Earl of Surrey, Sir Walter Raleigh, John Davies, Michael Drayton and Mary Sidney (Herbert), the Countess of Pembroke.

The theme The Silver Poets most often took to their pens was Love. Their offerings on the subject came in many poetic forms from the beginning of the English renaissance till the end of the Elizabethan Age. In this regard it broke with previous approaches and re-identified this complex emotion in new ways.

Allied to this these poets spoke on many subjects, including faith and politics, in new ways against a background of a century riven by religious conflicts as it turned from the suffocating and corrupt Catholic faith to welcome, and at times reject, the purer form of Protestantism. Across Europe new ideas brought turmoil, the threat of invasion, new expressions of art and many other elements to these shores.

It was also an age when England began to confidently survey the horizon and look to a future that promised much, including a golden age of literature, and fleets venturing overseas in search of trade, dominions and ideas.

“A specter is haunting Europe - the specter of Communism. All the powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this specter; Pope and Czar, Metternich and Guizot, French radicals and German police spies." - Karl Marx, The Communist Manifesto (1848)
Bernard Bradshaw along with his crew are caught in a sudden cave in. Within the dark confines of the unstable mine continuing to crumble Bernard finds Malcolm Armstrong helping disabled miner Oliver Spinks through the dirt and mortar. The crew are about to leave when they hear the faint cry of Nikolai Patrenko in the dark. Bernard orders Malcolm and Oliver to go up top and send for help while he journeys back into the mine to rescue Nikolai.
Bernard finds Nikolai trying to dig out his workmate Horace Sampson crushed under rubble. Nikolai is hysterical. Bernard calms Nikolai down and the two leave Horace's body and escape before the mine collapses.
The men tell Nikolai about the pit owner Clemence Reed who supplies cheap and dangerous materials to the mine workers and disregards workers safety for profit. Nikolai meets pub landlord Gregor Griggs who reveals Nikolai’s true identity as an illegal Russian immigrant. Bernard and Nikolai go to tell Nonie Sampson and her daughters of Horace Death.
Nancy is intrigued by Nikolai. He offers to teach her to read and write. Nikolai tells Nancy he is in hiding from Russian Police and uses a secret method to write letters to his comrades back in Russia without the police being able to read them.
Nikolai writes a letter to Aleksandr Ulyanov detailing the lives of his workmates. He tells of Bernard's past as a disgraced boxer, how Oliver Spinks became disabled, Hugo Boyce shameless adultery and obsession with Nancy Sampson and Malcolm Armstrongs respected past on the battlegrounds of the Boer War Transvaal rebellion . We fade out to the furious scratch of a quill on paper.
