On a summer morning in Sarajevo almost a hundred years ago, a teenager took a pistol out of his pocket and fired not just the opening rounds of the First World War but the starting gun for modern history. By killing Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Gavrilo Princip started a cycle of events that would leave 15 million dead from fighting between 1914 and 1918 and that proved fatal for empires and a way of ruling that had held for centuries. The Trigger tells the story of a young man who changed the world forever. It focuses on the drama of the incident itself by following Princip's journey. By retracing his steps from the feudal frontier village of his birth, through the mountains of the northern Balkans to the great plain city of Belgrade, and ultimately to Sarajevo, Tim Butcher illuminates our understanding of Princip and makes discoveries about him that have eluded historians for a hundred years. Traveling through the Balkans on Princip's trail, and drawing on his own experiences there as a war reporter during the 1990s, Butcher unravels this complex part of the world and its conflicts, and shows how the events that were sparked that day in June 1914 still have influence today. Published for the centenary of the assassination, The Trigger is a rich and timely work, part travelogue, part reportage, and part history.

Our best friends. They can be pets or working dogs; they race for sticks and balls or find survivors of disasters, and they are the subjects of some of the most amazing and touching stories:

Employees of the Albany post office adopted a stray puppy named Owney, and in his life he traveled hundreds of thousands of miles with the mail to places around the world
John Dignard, victim of a brain injury, introduced the concept of memory dogs by training a German shepherd help him
Rescue dogs working 9/11 found a few survivors, but the remains they uncovered provided closure for grieving families
Times were tough for Jude Stringfellow, but a bipedal puppy named Faith taught her to hope again
The Sica family’s golden retriever, Bullet, saved their three-week-old son from certain death from an undiagnosed heart condition
Stubby, a mongrel boxer mutt, became a hero on the front lines when his frenetic barking alerted sleeping soldiers to poisonous gas
Skippy, a hearing-ear dog, has given Kerena Marchant a taste of what freedom really means
Blue heeler cross Skidboot has made appearances on Jay Leno, Oprah and the Late Show with David Letterman to perform his amazing tricks
And so many more heartwarming stories.

The first edition of this very popular nineteenth century cookbook was published in 1839 as The American Housewife, later expanded to The Kitchen Directory and American Housewife and often republished as The American Housewife and Kitchen Directory. Author Anne Howe’s name did not appear on the title page until later editions published after this 1841 version. Her preface states that although she is not an Ude (French chef) or a Kitchiner (popular British cookbook author), she knows the culinary arts as “practiced by good American cooks.” Bemoaning the inadequate instructions and limited practical knowledge expressed in other cookbooks, she presents over 350 recipes from the simplest broths to the most delicate cakes and sweetmeats with efficient instructions and practical economy. In addition to her recipe collection, the book includes recipes on cookery for the sick and making perfumes, as well as sections on housewifery and carving that appear to be simply lifted from earlier works. This edition of The Kitchen Directory and American Housewife was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the Society is a research library documenting the life of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The Society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection includes approximately 1,100 volumes.

The true definition of a shaggy dog story is as follows: a long, rambling story or joke, typically one that is amusing only because it is absurdly inconsequential or pointless. A ‘Shaggy dog’ story in its purest form is a long-winded tale which eventually arrives at a sometimes ridiculous and often ‘groan-inducing’ punchline. After much research and to the best of my knowledge, these stories have never been released in audiobook form or print. Having said that, the main reason for putting together this collection of stories and jokes is in the hope of encouraging parents, particularly fathers to become storytellers to their children, although obviously, anyone can listen. As a father of three, these stories hold fond memories for me during long car journeys and keeping my sons entertained. No matter how many times they’re repeated, kids love to hear them over and over again. Some of the stories might be considered incredibly ‘cringe worthy’ but the fact is, kids, love them and will love hearing you tell them. I guarantee they will pass these stories on to their children when they too become parents. Some of these tales might not be considered ‘politically correct these days, so use your judgement in their retelling. I have included some of the best ‘Quickfire Dad jokes’ between stories and a rude section of rhymes and limericks at the end of the book. These will hopefully bring back fond memories from your childhood and time in the playground as they do for me. Have fun and enjoy spending time with your children, they grow up so quickly. To quote Superman: The son becomes the father and the father becomes the son.

The stories of the officers and crew who served aboard the ironclad warship up until that fateful stormy New Year’s Eve in 1862. The United States Navy’s first ironclad warship rose to glory during the Battle of Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862, but there's much more to know about the USS Monitor. Historian John Quarstein has painstakingly compiled bits of historical data gathered through years of research to present the first comprehensive picture of the lives of the officers and crew who served faithfully in an iron ship unlike any vessel previously known. “The Monitor Boys,” a moniker the men gave themselves, is a reflection of how these hundred-odd souls were bound together through storms, battles, boredom, and disaster. Just living aboard the ironclad took uncommon effort and fortitude. Their perseverance through the heat, stress, and unseaworthiness that defined life on the ship makes the study of those who dared it a worthy endeavor. Many recognized that they were part of history. Moreover, the Monitor Boys were agents in the change of naval warfare. Following Quarstein’s compelling narrative is a detailed chronology as well as appendices including crew member biographies, casualties, and statistics and dimensions of the ship. Readers can dive into the world of the Monitor and meet William Flye, George Geer, and the rest of the men who risked everything by going to sea in the celebrated “cheesebox on a raft” and became the hope of a nation wracked by war.  Includes illustrations
