Sinopsis

"Restorative Spaces" explores the profound impact of interior design on our mental and physical well-being, revealing how thoughtful spatial arrangement can foster relaxation and promote healing.

The book delves into the core principles of restorative design, emphasizing biophilic design – our inherent connection to nature – as a stress-reducing element.

It also examines the crucial role of sensory experience, highlighting how elements like color and texture influence mood and behavior.

Rooted in environmental psychology and neuroscience, the book presents evidence-based insights on creating therapeutic environments.

It uniquely integrates scientific research with practical design, offering a balanced perspective applicable to homes, workplaces, and healthcare facilities.

Did you know that incorporating natural light and vegetation can significantly enhance cognitive function? Or that the layout of a space can directly impact feelings of safety and comfort?

The book begins by laying the theoretical foundation for restorative design, then dedicates sections to biophilic design, sensory elements, and spatial arrangement.

It culminates by exploring real-world applications, empowering readers to transform spaces into havens of well-being.

When Jewher Ilham's father, Ilham Tohti, an internationally known advocate for peaceful dialogue between his Uyghur people and Han Chinese, was detained at the Beijing airport in February 2013 on charges of "separatism," and later sentenced to life in prison, Jewher was forced to begin a new life apart from her family in a new country. There, she found her voice as an advocate for her father, and for Uyghur people being forced into concentration camps by the Chinese government.

In Because I Have To: The Path To Survival, The Uyghur Struggle, Jewher shares an intimate account of how she maintained the strength and courage to fight for her father, the sometimes emotional toll it took on her, and the inspiration and loss of her mentor. With the inclusion of testimonials of Uyghur camp survivors and others affected by the crackdown on Uyghurs in China, Because I Have To:The Path to Survival, The Uyghur Struggle tells the story of one person, and of an entire culture under threat.

It is 1963, Jean-Yves Soucy is 18 and looking for a summer job. He dreams of being a fire warden scanning the boreal forest from a fire tower. But to his dismay he is sent to an equipment depot somewhere between Val-d’Or and Chibougamau in Northern Quebec. His disappointment vanishes when he learns that the depot is located near a Cree community and that he will have two Cree guides, including a man named William Saganash, and his work will involve canoeing through the lakes and rivers of the region.
On each encounter with the Crees, on each of the long trips across water or through the bush, Jean-Yves expects to see a new world but realizes he’s meeting a different civilization, as different from his own as Chinese civilization. Yet he knows nothing about it. Nor does he understand the nature surrounding them as do his Cree guides, and friends.
Jean-Yves Soucy wrote this story because Romeo Saganash, son of William, insisted: “You have to write that, Jean-Yves. About your relationship with my father and the others, how you saw the village. You got to see the end of an era.”
He unfortunately passed away before completing it. However, in his poignant Afterword, Romeo Saganash provides a finishing touch to this story of an unlikely meeting of two worlds.
