Sinopsis

Economic Regulations offers a comprehensive look into how administrative laws shape the economic landscape, impacting businesses, international trade, and financial markets. The book argues that these regulations, born from historical market failures and the need for consumer protection, are fundamental tools that shape economic behavior. Intriguingly, effective regulation can foster innovation and sustainable growth, while poorly designed rules can stifle competition and exacerbate instability.

The book progresses by first introducing core concepts of administrative law and economic regulation. It then examines how regulations affect business operations, international trade (exploring tariffs and trade agreements), and the regulation of financial markets, including banking and securities laws. Through legal statutes, economic data, and case studies, the book demonstrates the practical implications of regulatory policy and deregulation.

Ultimately, Economic Regulations provides a framework for evaluating the effectiveness of economic regulations, offering actionable insights for policymakers and businesses alike. It emphasizes that understanding the interplay between politics, economics, and law is crucial for navigating the complex regulatory environment and promoting economic stability.

An entertaining and enlightening collection of ancient Roman writings about home design and decoration

The idea that our homes can communicate professional as well as personal identities may seem as new as the work-from-home revolution. But it was second nature to the ancient Romans, for whom the home was in many ways the center of public and private life. Roman authors saw infinite practical and symbolic value in houses, and they have much to say about them. How to Make a Home presents some of the best Roman writings on houses—from buying and selling to designing and decorating.

Edited and elegantly translated by Marden Fitzpatrick Nichols, How to Make a Home gathers selections by Cicero, Vitruvius, Seneca, and others. These writings reveal the pleasures and pitfalls of the Roman practice of making one's home a cornerstone of self-expression. While the ideal home enshrined Roman virtues and could make a career, lavish building projects could lead to financial ruin and moral condemnation. These authors memorably describe such travails as deceptive staging, decorators run amok, know-it-all owners, unsupervised contractors, and buyer's remorse. Along the way, they also explain why simplicity is bliss, privacy is for nobodies, a neglected house is a sign of a neglected soul, and much more.

What does it mean to be cosmopolitan? Typically, cosmopolitanism is understood as a broad moral orientation, involving some kind of commitment to global moral equality. On this understanding, to be cosmopolitan is simply to evidence that moral orientation oneself. By contrast, Being Cosmopolitan takes up a thoroughly political approach. The focus is on what it might mean, and what it is like, to be political in a distinctly cosmopolitan form. What it means to be cosmopolitan in this thoroughly political sense cannot involve appeal to any particular moral orientation, because politics is about, inter alia, the contestation of such orientations and commitments. Instead, this book offers an account that is based upon the internalization of particular kind of global "social imaginary," involving the imagination of a global public to which certain issues—or global public affairs—are understood to pertain.

Within which kind of global order is it possible, or comfortable, for a cosmopolitical agent to live? In answer to this question, the book argues against the viability of both a world of self-determining peoples, and of "pluralist" global visions—both of which are popular with moral cosmopolitan theorists.

An unhappy childhood often affects who we become in adulthood and our capacity to enjoy whatever successes we achieve. In Healing of a Psychotherapist: A Journey of Rebellion, Reflection, and Redemption, Charles McCormack, MA, MSW, LCSW-C, uses his own life in illustration. With searing honesty, McCormack lays bare his personal and professional ordeals, along with the lessons he’s drawn and continues to draw. Though his story is unique, his struggles are not; thus, McCormack’s narrative works its way into the heart of each of us. His take home, the one given to him by his mother on her deathbed, is clear. Staring into his eyes, she was emphatic: “Charlie. Have a good life. Have a good life.,” refusing to break her hold upon him until he finally committed, “I will, mom, I will, “ all the while thinking, “how the hell do I do that?” McCormack hopes that sharing his story through this book brings his readers insight and healing.
Mr. McCormack holds master's degrees in Psychology and Social Work. Since 1974, he has worked in in-patient psychiatric units, family violence, sexual abuse treatment, and SUDs treatment programs, and private practice. In 1988, he was named the Senior Social Worker of Adult Long-term Inpatient Services at Sheppard Pratt. His writings include “Treatment of the Borderline/Schizoid Couple,” "Treating Borderline States in Marriage," and "Essence" (memoir), awarded the Montaigne Medal for being the most thought-provoking of books. He was a long-term faculty member of the Washington School Psychiatry and Clinician of the Year (Maryland Society of Clinical Social Work). Long before social work embraced trauma-informed approaches, McCormack wrote about and trained social workers in ways of conceptualizing and humanizing work with individuals and couples impacted by major psychopathology. In 2023, McCormack was the recipient of the University of Maryland School of Social Work's Emeritus Award for contributions to the profession.
