Sinopsis

Mikhail Lermontov's "A Hero of Our Time" is a pioneering work in Russian literature that intricately blends psychological profundity with a fragmented narrative style. The novel, composed of five interconnected stories revolving around Pechorin, an enigmatic anti-hero, delves into themes of existentialism and the nature of the human condition. Lermontov's lyrical prose, characterized by its rich imagery and poignant introspection, situates the novel within the broader context of Romanticism while also foreshadowing modernist concerns about identity and alienation. Through Pechorin's adventures and misadventures, Lermontov conveys a critique of the superficiality of aristocratic society and the disillusionment prevalent in Russian life during the 19th century. Mikhail Lermontov, often referred to as the successor to Pushkin, was significantly influenced by his tumultuous upbringing and the societal turbulence of his time. His experiences as a soldier and his exposure to the Caucasus region infused his writing with a deep sense of philosophical inquiry and a profound understanding of the human spirit's struggles. "A Hero of Our Time" reflects Lermontov's own disconnection from the world, a sentiment that resonates with many of his contemporaries as they grappled with their place in an ever-changing society. This novel is a compelling and reflective exploration of the complexities of human nature, making it indispensable for readers interested in understanding not only Lermontov's literary legacy but also the broader existential questions that resonate even today. "A Hero of Our Time" invites readers to confront the haunting dilemmas of modern existence through the eyes of its indelible protagonist, ensuring its relevance across generations.

It was George Orwell's early writing that helped shape his worldview and writing style. Here we focus on his works "The Spike" and "A Hanging," and his time as a police officer in Burma. Orwell's first published work was an essay titled "The Spike," which appeared in 1931. The essay is a vivid and harrowing account of his time spent in a homeless shelter in London. Orwell, who was struggling financially at the time, chose to experience a homeless shelter firsthand, and his account is an indictment of the dehumanizing conditions he encountered. In "The Spike," Orwell describes the brutal reality of life in the shelter, where men were treated like animals and forced to endure hunger, cold, and violence. "Shooting An Elephant" is too tragically eye-opening.This would later inform his political views and writing, particularly his belief in the importance of social justice and his struggle against oppression. In his essay "How the Poor Die," Orwell describes his observations of the poor and their struggle with illness and death. He portrays a society where the poor are neglected and left to suffer in silence and without dignity. This essay is another example of Orwell's commitment to social justice and his belief in the importance of empathy and compassion. In 1931, Orwell joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, where he served for five years. There he witnessed the brutal realities of colonialism and oppression. In his essay A Hanging," (1931), Orwell recounts the experience of attending the execution of a prisoner. Orwell describes the prisoner's final moments with empathy and his account of the execution is a moving critique of the dehumanizing effects of state-sanctioned violence.Orwell's experiences with poverty oppression and violence informed his later political and social beliefsAs read by Emmy-nominated actor Geoffrey Giuliano. This is a collection of translations of six short stories of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.  These six short stories are selected from his book ‘Galpaguchha’.  The stories are, 'Alive and Dead' (Jeebita o Mreeta), 'Suva', 'The First Look' (Shuvadrishti), 'Hoimantee', ‘Letter from Your Wife' (Streer Patra) and 'The Anonymous Lady' (Aparichita). I have selected these stories, because first of all I enjoyed reading these stories and secondly all these six stories are concerned about the position of women in the family and in the society at that time, that is, during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century.
These stories depict the vulnerability of women, their lack of control over their marriage and life as a whole.  Show a glimpse of life of another time and of another culture. The line of thinking may seem much different from today’s life, but in many parts of the world still there are some people who like to suppress the rights of women in the name of religion or culture. So, these stories are still relevant.
Excerpts from Alive and Dead, Kadambinee cannot tolerate any more, she says sharply, ‘Oh, please, I didn’t die, did not die!  How will I make you understand that I didn’t die? Let me show you that I am alive.’
From Hoimantee, ‘My life was so full to the brim on all sides, that I could not notice any gap anywhere.  Suddenly, I witnessed a large void of hopelessness so near me!  I couldn’t understand how and with what I would fill up this void.’
From Letter from Your Wife, Mreenal, ‘I can never understand the logic behind that it’s okay not to please me, but it’s not okay to make you unhappy.’

"Curiosity doesn't just kill the cat—it wakes things that should stay buried."

In A Thin Ghost and Others, M. R. James invites you into the quiet world of dusty archives, secluded cathedrals, and English country estates—only to reveal the terrors lurking in the shadows. This collection features five haunting tales, including the titular "The Residence at Whitminster" and the unsettling "The Diary of Mr. Poynter." James's ghosts aren't your typical white-sheeted spirits; they are hairy, leathery, and intensely tactile creatures of malice. With a slow-burn build-up and a focus on atmospheric dread, these stories prove that the most terrifying things are those we find in the corner of our eye.

The Master of Atmosphere: James is the undisputed king of the "quiet" horror story. He relies on the power of suggestion and the unsettling feeling of being watched. Whether it's a strange pattern on a piece of fabric or a figure seen from a distance that shouldn't be there, James knows exactly how to make your skin crawl without ever raising his voice.

Scholarly Suspense: As a medieval scholar himself, James brings an authentic sense of history to his fiction. His protagonists are often academics who believe their knowledge protects them, only to find that the ancient world has teeth. The realism of the settings makes the intrusion of the supernatural all the more jarring and effective.

Why It Is Essential for Horror Fans: If you prefer psychological dread over jump scares, A Thin Ghost and Others is a must-read. These stories influenced everyone from H.P. Lovecraft to modern filmmakers. They are the perfect accompaniment to a cold, windy night and a flickering fire.
