Sinopsis

Here, in the Fourth Part of the Trilogy, Melia finally gets answers. Why are so many people trying to kill her? Does it include the Batter family or is it just the arms dealers? Who's got the Batter gold and what happened to Jan Branch - is she ever coming back?
This is the final part of the story, but it can be read as a stand-along novel. It's just another adventure in the continuing 'Amelia Hartliss Mysteries', based in Salford UK and played out in Salford and Manchester, the world of crime hasn't stopped just because of something silly like a pandemic. Gangsters have their own agendas, plus grudges and vendettas. The thing that gets the bad guys out of bed in the morning is the prospect of getting even with those they think have crossed them - for the last time.
(And ladies. It isn't all bad 'guys', not this time. Melia has to come to terms with the face that the female can be as deadly as the male.)
Not surprisingly, since things got so complicated last year, it's not surprising that there's not simply one mystery in this tangled web. There's more to it than that. Luckily, Melia is the kind of feisty herioine that isn't going to let a mere question of being hopelessly outnumbered get in her way. She will prevail, that much is certain.
Somehow, her opponents should have know that.

Miss Lucy Bertram is content to spend her days writing scientific articles or curling up with a Gothic romance novel. Indeed, she'd rather stick a hatpin in her eye than attend a ball. But when her father, the eccentric botanist Sir Oswald, insists she accept the suit of a wealthy but stiffer-than-a-poker industrialist to save the family from penury, Lucy decides to act. She's certain her disowned brother, Monty, will take her side. But first she must find him in St. Giles's cutthroat rookeries. A covert agent for the Crown, William Lockhart, the Earl of Kyle, is on the hunt for a ruthless killer determined to destroy the Linnean Society. Sir Oswald, a botanical poisons expert, is the prime suspect. Posing as a groom in the baronet's household, it shouldn't take Will long to unearth the evidence Scotland Yard needs. If only the beguiling Miss Bertram wasn't so damn distracting… As an unexpected but undeniable passion flares between Lucy and Will, confidences are exchanged and dark secrets come to light. But will a murderer, determined to stay hidden, destroy their chances of finding a happy-ever-after?

Set in 1835 in the Pennsylvania town of Adamant, Fergus’s first novel in a new mystery series introduces Sheriff Gideon Stoltz, who, as a young deputy, is thrust into his position by the death of the previous sheriff. Gideon faces his first real challenge as death rocks the small town again when the respected judge Hiram Biddle commits suicide. No one is more distraught than Gideon, whom the old judge had befriended as a mentor and hunting partner. Gideon is regarded with suspicion as an outsider: he’s new to town, and Pennsylvania Dutch in the back-country Scotch-Irish settlement. And he found the judge’s body.

Making things even tougher is the way the judge’s death stirs up vivid memories of Gideon’s mother’s murder, the trauma that drove him west from his home in the settled Dutch country of eastern Pennsylvania. He had also discovered her body.

At first Gideon simply wants to learn why Judge Biddle killed himself. But as he finds out more about the judge’s past, he realizes that his friend's suicide was spurred by much more than the man’s despair. Gideon’s quest soon becomes more complex as it takes him down a dangerous path into the past.

A Stranger Here Below is so atmospheric, so compelling and convincing, that readers will taste the grit of the dirt roads, cringe at the unsanitary conditions and medical superstitions that inflame a flu epidemic, and marvel at the immensely arduous task of carrying out an investigation using the primitive tools of the early 1800s. Fergus leaves us breathlessly waiting for the next Gideon Stoltz mystery.

TGIF used to mean happy hour drinks or curling up with delivery pizza. But when you live in an inn for paranormal beings, the end of the week often signals the beginning of chaos.

And this Friday? A banshee has invaded the basement, I've shifted from human to cat three times in one day (a personal record I never wanted to set), and my confidential files at SPA headquarters have mysteriously vanished.

Getting rid of the shrieking banshee is priority number one, and all we have to do is solve a local murder.

    Easy enough, right?

The suspect pool quickly narrows to four grieving family members, but it doesn't take long for the waters to muddy as secrets and resentments bubble to the surface.

Between vengeful spirits, family feuds, and my own mysterious past catching up with me, surviving until Monday is looking less likely by the hour.

Maybe I'd be better off as a full-time cat after all.
