Sinopse

Foul Play dissects the age-old subject of cheating in all its absurdity. From plain old doping to claiming a marathon victory despite having driven the middle section of the race, from match-fixing to diving for a penalty - cheating in sport is as old as sport itself.

There are plenty of well-known cases of cheats being found out in sport: Ben Johnson, for example, was stripped of his 100m Olympic medal after a positive drugs test; South African cricketer Hansie Cronje was banned from all cricket for life after admitting involvement in match-rigging; rugby union recently found itself having to deal with the "bloodgate" scandal. However, there are myriad other examples of bending the rules more subtly: pressuring the referee, demoralising an opponent with mind games, or shirt-pulling.

But what constititues cheating and where do we draw the line? Are some sports cleaner than others? Is cheating in one sport the same as cheating in another or does each sport's distinctive culture set different standards? Is there such a thing as a sport without sin? Or, indeed, a sporting competitor?

This book is not a catalogue of past sporting misdemeanours so much as an investigation into the lengths to which some sports people have gone, and will go, to get the better of others. And also the lengths to which they will not go.

Explore over a century of Cardinals baseball in this illustrated tour of the players, teams, ballparks, and historic moments!

With a legacy that goes back to the Brown Stockings of the old American Association, the St. Louis Cardinals have one of the longest and greatest traditions in the history of baseball. Winners of ten World Series titles (second only to the New York Yankees) and twenty-one pennants dating back to 1885, the Redbirds have established a dynasty across the decades—from Charlie Comiskey’s four-time AA champs, through the “Gashouse Gang” of the 1930s and the “Runnin’ Redbirds” in the 1980s, up to the 2006 World Champions.

Front-office pioneers like Chris von der Ahe and Branch Rickey have put the Cardinals franchise at the forefront of innovation, while bringing in some of baseball’s greatest talent—pitchers Dizzy Dean to Bob Gibson, sluggers Johnny Mize to Mark McGwire, and all-around superstars like Rogers “Rajah” Hornsby, Stan “the Man” Musial, and Albert Pujols. Pairing historic black-and-white photos and contemporary images of the modern game, St. Louis Cardinals: Past & Present explores the ballparks and the fans, the players and the teams that have defined Cardinals baseball.

A novice’s tale of scaling Everest: “Recommended for all armchair adventurers who have ever wondered what it would be like to climb in the Himalayas.”—Geographical Magazine   The last attempt to conquer Everest by the unclimbed northeast ridge had ended in failure and tragedy, with the deaths of two great climbers, Joe Tasker and Pete Boardman. Now, in March 1985, Mal Duff would lead a new expedition. Andrew Grieg and the others knew the risks as well as the excitement of the challenge—and in this extraordinary book, Greig chronicles not only the assault on the peak but also the complex relationships of nineteen very different personalities living together.   “Poet, novelist, and novice climber Greig's insightful account of the 1985 ascent of Everest's previously unclimbed northeast ridge provides an unusual perspective on the world of climbing. In comparison to many seasoned mountaineers, with their sometimes obsessive ‘diehard’ drive, Greig possesses a refreshing sense of enthusiasm and innocence. His lack of experience allows him to describe with great intensity and detail the difficult tasks of climbing in a methodical step-by-step fashion, allowing readers to grasp the complex challenges. Greig is often able to step back and observe the goings-on, providing a detached analysis of the group and its dynamics. To complement his version of events, he also draws liberally from the diaries of the other participants. A unique addition to mountaineering literature with charming and distinct characteristics.”—Library Journal

This quadruple award-winning book combines the deep connection we have with our dogs and our connection to nature by weaving together the practice of forest bathing with our practice of walking our dogs with practical tips and stories and bringing more joy and depth to both.
Is forest bathing for me and my dog? Yes! You don’t need a swimsuit—no special attire required. Forest-bathing is accessible to all levels of fitness and mobility. It is a new (and very old) type of restorative stroll in the woods with your dog.
Why do forest bathing with my dog? If you feel like you are bouncing from one thing to the next, never relaxing, forest-bathing will reduce your stress, reset your nervous systems, have lasting positive effects on your immune system, and increase the well-being of both you and your dog. This is another way of being outdoors that your dog will love, and I think you will, too.
What is it like to forest bathe with my dog? It’s a natural fit. You don’t have to go far. More of a meander or sitting that pairs easily with the natural rhythm of your regular routine. The aim of forest-bathing is to slow down, become immersed in the natural environment, and use your senses to tune in to the smells, textures, tastes, and sights of the forest.
It’s a love story. While this book is a guide about forest bathing with your dog, it’s also a bit of a love story about your relationships with your dog, the forests you walk in, and the land you live on.
