Ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians and Greeks, were aware of the veins' function in the circulatory system, though the scientific understanding of venous diseases didn’t fully develop until much later. The term "phlebology" itself comes from the Greek word “phlebo,” meaning vein, and it was only in the 19th and 20th centuries that significant advancements in the understanding and treatment of venous diseases were made. Medical pioneers began to recognize the critical role veins play in maintaining overall circulation, and with the advent of new diagnostic and surgical technologies, the treatment of venous disorders became more effective.
