Synopsis

In "The Complete Essays of Montaigne," Michel de Montaigne masterfully weaves personal reflection with philosophical inquiry, forging a new literary form that became the foundation of the essay genre. This collection spans diverse themes such as human nature, friendship, and the complexities of life, characterized by Montaigne's engaging prose that oscillates between conversational intimacy and profound introspection. Each essay serves as a portal into Montaigne's mind, revealing the Renaissance preoccupation with individual experience and skepticism, all while embracing the richness of anecdote and the nuances of lived experience. Montaigne, a French philosopher and statesman of the 16th century, drew inspiration from his varied life experiences, personal losses, and classical texts. His time was marked by religious conflict and a questioning of established truths, which deeply influenced his reflective approach. Often regarded as the pioneer of modern skepticism and self-examination, Montaigne was able to infuse his essays with both the weight of inquiry and the lightness of humor, prompting readers to engage in their own processes of introspection. This authoritative collection is essential for anyone seeking to understand the human condition through the lens of one of history's most perceptive thinkers. Montaigne's essays remain remarkably relevant, inviting readers to explore their own thoughts and beliefs while enriching their understanding of philosophical discourse. Recommended for students, scholars, and readers of all backgrounds, "The Complete Essays of Montaigne" is a timeless treasure trove of wisdom.

Our world, without question, is experiencing aberrational times. The life-altering realities of COVID-19 that I worked through as White House press secretary were just the start of it. What followed was a series of history-defining events. From the fall of Afghanistan to the nationwide crime wave, we've all endured painful images of death, destruction, and chaos. Meanwhile, radical teachings on gender and race have infiltrated our nation's schools, poisoning the minds of our children—all at a time when our country feels more divided than ever before. Along with these twenty-first century realities can come a feeling of despair and discouragement. Indeed, I hear it all the time as I crisscross the country: Americans feel disheartened and seek hope.

Taking a similar format to my New York Times bestselling book, For Such a Time as This, I analyze our domestic and international challenges through the lens of faith. Though we have lived through dark times, the storms we face have prompted many great leaders to rise to the moment and have left a yearning in the human heart for a Savior, Jesus Christ, who is walking alongside us every step of the way.

On August 23, 1984, at the Dallas Convention Center, Reagan accepts the presidential nomination of the Republican party. Reagan reminds Democrats of the high inflation and interest rates when he took office in 1980 and claims Democrats “never met a tax they didn't like or hike.”
In 1981 “we started a policy of tightening the Federal budget instead of the family budget.” Reagan cites an improved “misery index” (the total of the inflation and unemployment rates) and improved poverty levels.
“In the 4 years before we took office, country after country fell under the Soviet yoke. Since January 20th, 1981, not 1 inch of soil has fallen to the Communists.” (long applause)
America is “more confident than ever” with “the strongest economic growth” and “the fastest rate of job creation”.
We support NATO, Israel, and free Latin American States that “struggle to prevent Communist takeovers fueled massively by the Soviet Union and Cuba.” We rescued “American students on the imprisoned island of Grenada.”
We oppose deficits, and support a balanced budget amendment, the line-item veto, tuition tax credits, enterprise zones, and lower taxes. There is no room for anti-Semitism or bigotry in the party of Lincoln.
With America at peace, “we’re in the midst of a springtime of hope” and see America as “a shining city on a hill.” We look forward to “the Olympic Games here in the United States” and marvel “at the journey of the Olympic torch” across our country.

"Fort Sumter's Flame: How Secession and Lincoln's Election Lit the Civil War" delves deep into the turbulent months leading up to the American Civil War, when the nation teetered on the edge of destruction. This meticulously researched book traces the chain of events that began with Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860, which sent shockwaves through the Southern states, igniting their cries for secession. As tensions escalated, the focus of the nation's turmoil turned to Fort Sumter, a small federal outpost in Charleston Harbor. Here, the first shots of the Civil War were fired, sparking a conflict that would define the nation's future.
Authoritative and compelling, "Fort Sumter's Flame" explores the political and social factors that fueled the secessionist movement and brings to life the key figures whose decisions set the stage for war. The book vividly portrays a divided nation where compromise seemed impossible and conflict inevitable. From the bitter debates in Congress to the anxious uncertainty of everyday Americans, this book captures the passion, fear, and resolve that led to the Civil War.
Through gripping narratives and insightful analysis, "Fort Sumter's Flame" offers readers a front-row seat to the events that transformed the United States forever. It's an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the origins of America's most devastating conflict and the enduring legacy of the Civil War.

This is an audiobook of Wheel Publications No. 102/103 Buddhist Reflections on Death by V. F. Gunaratne, narrated by Jonathan Nelson.

"To most of us, at some moment or another, the spectacle of death must have given rise to the deepest of thoughts and profoundest of questions. What is life worth, if able bodies that once performed great deeds now lie flat and cold, senseless and lifeless? What is life worth, if eyes that once sparkled with joy, eyes that once beamed with love are now closed forever, bereft of movement, bereft of life? Thoughts such as these are not to be repressed. It is just these inquiring thoughts, if wisely pursued, that will ultimately unfold the potentialities inherent in the human mind to receive the highest truths.
"According to the Buddhist way of thinking, death, far from being a subject to be shunned and avoided, is the key that unlocks the seeming mystery of life. It is by understanding death that we understand life; for death is part of the process of life in the larger sense. In another sense, life and death are two ends of the same process and if you understand one end of the process, you also understand the other. Hence, by understanding the purpose of death we also understand the purpose of life."
    —V.F. Gunaratne
