Summary

Michel de Montaigne was one of the most influential figures of the Renaissance, singlehandedly responsible for popularising the essay as a literary form. In 1572, Montaigne retired to his estates in order to devote himself to leisure, reading and reflection. There he wrote his constantly expanding 'essays', inspired by the ideas he found in books from his library and his own experience. He discusses subjects as diverse as war-horses and cannibals, poetry and politics, sex and religion, love and friendship, ecstasy and experience. Above all, Montaigne studied himself to find his own inner nature and that of humanity. The Essays are among the most idiosyncratic and personal works in all literature. An insight into a wise Renaissance mind, they continue to engage, enlighten and entertain modern readers.

The enigmatic founder and leader of the Beatles, John Lennon was not only a groundbreaking musician and composer for the ages but also a keen philosopher, seeker of truth, and politically savvy advocate of nonviolence, tolerance, and unrestricted personal freedom. The enlightened big brother to now several generations, Lennon consistently gave everything he had, and then some, to his liberated, infectious music and wide-ranging, common-sense political ideals. In this expansive, comprehensive collection the very best of John Lennon’s thought-provoking words, the myth, legend, and rumor surrounding this great man is stripped away, and the real John as artist and thoughtful global citizen emerges. Carefully edited to relieve the listener of the tedious twee of the almost always ill-informed and sensationalist-seeking interviewer, Lennon is free to speak his mind on an incredible array of subjects; including his work with the Beatles, his days as a freaky peace politician, his relationships with the other members of the group, the painful trails of his parentless childhood, the creation of his artistic work, and other equally engrossing entertaining Lennonspeak. Here is the perfect collection of the great John Lennon for every dedicated Beatles fan, music historian, the media, as well as all school, library, institutional, and university collections.Series producer Avalon Giuliano in New York. Produced by Alex Franchi in Milan. Edited and mixed by Macc Kay in Bangkok. ICON intern Eden Giuliano. Music by AudioNautix.

Renowned songwriter, singer, and wife of Waylon Jennings writes an intimate, enormously entertaining memoir of American music, of life with Waylon and the Outlaws, and of faith lost and found.
The daughter of a Pentecostal evangelist and a race-car driver, Jessi Colter played piano and sang in church before leaving Arizona to tour with rock-n-roll pioneer Duane Eddy, whom she married. Colter became a successful recording artist, appearing on American Bandstand and befriending stars such as the Everly Brothers and Chet Atkins, while her songs were recorded by Nancy Sinatra, Dottie West, and others. Her marriage to Eddy didn’t last, however, and in 1969 she married the electrifying Waylon Jennings. Together, they made their home in Nashville, which in the 1970s, was ground zero for roots music, drawing Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Shel Silverstein, and others to the Nashville Sound. And Jessi was at the center of it all, the only woman on the landmark Wanted: The Outlaws album, the record that launched the Outlaw Country genre and was the first country album to go platinum. She also tasted personal commercial success with the #1-single “I’m Not Lisa.”
But offstage, life was a challenge, as Waylon pursued his addictions and battled his demons. Having drifted from the church as a young woman, Jessi returned to her faith and found in it a source of strength in the turmoil of living with Waylon. In the 1980s, Waylon helped launch the super group The Highwaymen with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, and the hits kept rolling, as did Waylon’s reckless living. Amid it all, Jessi faithfully prayed for her husband until finally, at Thanksgiving 2001, Waylon found Jesus, just months before he died.
An Outlaw and a Lady is a powerful story of American music, of love in the midst of heartache, and of faith that sustains.
