Sinopsis

The New York Times–bestselling food writer delivers “a propulsively well-written trio of novellas . . . A richly layered book, full of surprises and pleasures” (Kate Christensen).   In his three novellas, “In Short Measures,” “Strong Conspirators,” and “Sally Forth,” Michael Ruhlman delves deeply into the nuanced complexity of romantic and sexual love—and the inevitable evolution of the heart over the span of years and decades.   Each novella asks questions about the nature of love in terms of loyalty and fidelity—what are one’s obligations toward one’s spouse, one’s family, and one’s heart? In the first novella, “In Short Measures,” these questions are bound up in a writer’s work and a long-ago love. In the second, “Strong Conspirators,” an unforeseen, cataclysmic event calls for responses from a husband and wife that have never been rehearsed, because they have never been required nor even imagined. In “Sally Forth,” a pair of old friends is forced to explore lost youth and lost love relative to maturity, marriage, and the passage of time.   Profoundly thought-provoking and satisfying, these novellas are beautifully written with plot twists from beginning to end that will captivate the reader.   “In Short Measures is rich, textured, and carefully constructed not only for surprises, but also with a powerful love of language and description throughout.” —Washington Independent Review of Books   “Ruhlman writes with intelligence and grace about the things that matter: love and loss and redemption. This is a literary achievement of the first order.” —Ann Hood, award-winning and bestselling author of The Book That Matters Most

This collection of stories by one of Britain’s most beloved novelists depicts domestic life during World War II as seen through the eyes of both children and adults   In “The Red-haired Miss Daintreys,” four six-foot-tall sisters capture the imagination of young Rebecca when she and her family are on holiday. Beautifully crafted and informed by Lehmann’s eye for telling detail, it is a moving meditation on familial ties, romantic love, and the end of an era. In “When the Waters Came” and “A Dream of Winter,” both the deprivations of war and a swarm of bees take their toll on the inhabitants of a small English village—afflicting one family in particular. “Wonderful Holidays” is the tale of a divorced woman who cares for two children while a wounded veteran of World War I longs for his absent wife. And the title story is an exploration of the unlikely friendship between two families—one privileged, one poor—and the tragedy that ensues when a band of gypsies sets up camp on the outskirts of town.   These five stories will sweep readers into a world where grieving is a necessary part of the human condition and love can flourish in the most unexpected places. Morality, the class system, the grim realities of war, love and loss—Lehmann’s trademark themes are on vivid display in this remarkable collection.

The main character in this short story is Gabriel Conroy and the entire short story takes place during his attendance at a holiday party, annually thrown by his aunts. Near the end of the party Gabriel sees his wife, Gretta, in a new and expanded way at the same moment when she is reminiscing on a song being sung at the party. Listen as James Joyce weaves harsh realities back into this story, as is characteristic with other stories in this series, "Dubliners".

The Unnamable represents a conversation between Randolph Carter and Joel Manton (alter-ego of Maurice W. Moe) in an old cemetery in Arkham (modeled after the Charter Street Burying Ground in Salem). Manton expresses disapproval of Carter's creation of horror stories. He considers them immature and, furthermore, claims that there is no such thing as "Unnamable". However, he will soon realize his mistake. It is difficult to call The Unnamed a story. It is more like a fictionalized literary essay, a precursor to a future series of essays titled In Defence of Dagon, in which Lovecraft will present a theory of the supernatural story and attempt to prove that horror literature should not be dismissed as exclusively immature, targeted at the masses.
