Sinopse

Political Analysis Sales investigates the intricate relationship between media, policy analysis, and public opinion in today's saturated political landscape. It examines how media outlets shape narratives and how political actors strategically use media to sway public sentiment. This book stands out by dissecting the algorithms that govern content distribution on social media platforms and analyzing how these algorithms impact political discourse. A key insight is how market forces incentivize sensationalized content, often overshadowing nuanced policy analysis.

The book uniquely combines quantitative data, such as media coverage analysis and polling data, with case studies to illustrate how media coverage influences policy outcomes. It progresses by first introducing a theoretical framework encompassing concepts like "agenda-setting" and "framing." It then applies these concepts to real-world political debates, showing how media shapes public opinion. Finally, it offers recommendations for media literacy and promotes evidence-based political discourse, emphasizing the importance of critical evaluation in navigating political media.

Since he was a child in the 1950s watching Vampires and Meteors operating from RAF Turnhouse, Jim Walls wanted to fly aircraft, he just never envisaged that his flying career would be spent in the back seat as opposed to the front. Jim guides listeners through his forty-year RAF career that started as a Boy Entrant at RAF Cosford, then as an air radar tradesman, before specializing as an air electronics operator (AEOp) in the Nimrod MR1, and later as an air electronics officer (AEO) who flew in Nimrod R1s and Vulcan B2s.

With detailed insight into the world of radar, electronic countermeasures, and signals intelligence, Jim highlights the role they played in warfare for numerous operations during the Cold War as well as the Falklands campaign, First Gulf War, and Bosnian War. As well as focusing on his career, Jim gives his viewpoint on matters such as Operation Black Buck and the reduced war-fighting capability of the Vulcan as it neared retirement.

This fascinating book showcases the vital role that AEOs held and the importance of radar and electronic warfare in the fight against enemy forces. It is also a tribute to the much-loved Cold War icons, the Nimrod and the Vulcan. This book will appeal to Cold War enthusiasts and fans of the iconic jets of that era.

In October 1962, American spy planes discovered the Soviets were building nuclear missile sites in Cuba, and intelligence officials informed President John F. Kennedy of this on October 16th. It went without saying that nuclear missile sites located just miles off the coast of the American mainland posed a grave threat to the country, especially because missiles launched from Cuba would reach their targets in mere minutes. That would throw off important military balances in nuclear arms and locations that had previously ensured the Cold War stayed cold. Almost all senior American political figures agreed that the sites were offensive and needed to be removed, but how? Ultimately, Kennedy's administration crafted an eventual plan that sought to avoid all-out war: a blockade of Cuba.
In the weeks and months following the crisis, Kennedy sought to ease nuclear tensions. By 1963, the first agreement was signed to limit the testing of nuclear devices, and the habit of secretly taping all meetings, phone calls, and other communications continued, due to the great assistance the practice had provided throughout the crisis.
As it turned out, October 1962 was probably the closest the Soviet Union and United States came to formally engaging in a war against each other, but of course, the possibility of a destructive nuclear war had been contemplated years before the Cuban Missile Crisis. That doomsday scenario is precisely why the federal government was working on a secret nuclear fallout bunker underneath the Greenbrier Hotel in West Virginia in the years preceding the crisis. Its existence would remain a secret for decades until being declassified shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and to this day the bunker remains both a source of curiosity and mystery.

Too Good to Be Altogether Lost -...

Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the well-known Little House series, wrote stories from her childhood because they were "too good to be altogether lost." With the release of NBC's Little House on the Prairie series in 1974, Wilder was well on her way to becoming an international literary superstar. Simultaneously, however, the novels themselves began to slip from view, replaced by an onslaught of assumptions and questions about Wilder's values and politics and even about the books' authenticity. From the 1980s, a slow but steady critical crescendo began to erode Wilder's literary reputation.

In Too Good to Be Altogether Lost, Wilder expert Pamela Smith Hill dives back into the Little House books, closely examining Wilder's text, her characters, and their stories. Hill reveals that these gritty, emotionally complex novels depict a realistic coming of age for a girl in the American West. This realism in Wilder's novels, once perceived as a fatal flaw, can lead to essential discussions not only about the past but about the present—and the underlying racism young people encounter when reading today. Hill's fresh approach to Wilder's books shows how this author forever changed the literary landscape of children's and young adult literature in ways that remain vital and relevant today.

In this authoritative biography, historian John Man brings Saladin and his world to life with vivid detail in "a rollicking good story" (Justin Marozzi).

Saladin remains one of the most iconic figures of his age. As the man who united the Arabs and saved Islam from Christian crusaders in the twelfth century, he is the Islamic world's preeminent hero. A ruthless defender of his faith and leader, he possessed qualities that won admiration from his Christian foes.

But Saladin is far more than a historical hero. Builder, literary patron, and theologian, he is a man for all times, and a symbol of hope for an Arab world once again divided. Centuries after his death, in cities from Damascus to Cairo and beyond, Saladin continues to be a potent symbol of religious and military resistance to the West. He is central to Arab memories, sensibilities, and the ideal of a unified Islamic state.

John Man charts Saladin's rise to power, his struggle to unify the warring factions of his faith, and his battles to retake Jerusalem and expel Christian influence from Arab lands. Saladin explores the life and enduring legacy of this champion of Islam while examining his significance for the world today.

Americans face increasingly stark choices each presidential election and a growing sense that our government can't solve the nation's most urgent challenges. Our eighteenth-century system is ill-suited to our twenty-first-century world. Information-age technology has undermined our capacity to face common problems together and turned our democracy upside down, with gerrymanders letting representatives choose voters rather than voters choosing them. In Parliamentary America, Maxwell L. Stearns argues that the solution to these complex problems is a parliamentary democracy.

Stearns considers such leading alternatives as ranked choice voting, the national popular vote, and congressional term limits, showing why these can't solve our constitutional crisis. Instead, three amendments—expanding the House of Representatives, having House party coalitions choose the president, and letting the House end a failing presidency based on no confidence—will produce a robust multiparty democracy.

Stearns takes listeners on a world tour—England, France, Germany, Israel, Taiwan, Brazil, and Venezuela—showing what works in government, what doesn't, and how to make the best features our own. Genuine party competition and governing coalitions, commonplace across the globe, may seem like a fantasy in the United States. But we can make them a reality.
