Sinopsis

Roman Senate Authority explores the Roman Senate's pivotal, yet often debated, role in Roman governance, from the late Republic to the late Empire. This book investigates whether the Senate was a genuine partner in power with the emperors or merely a symbolic entity. It examines the Senate's internal procedures, legislative and judicial capacities, and its complex relationship with the emperor, revealing the evolving power dynamics within the Roman state. The book illuminates how the Senate, despite the rise of imperial authority, maintained significant influence, shaped by factors like the prevailing political climate and the Senate's own assertiveness.

The book argues against simplistic views of imperial dominance by presenting a more nuanced depiction of shared power. For example, the Senate's ability to enact laws and administer provinces demonstrates its active role in governance. By analyzing senatorial decrees and historical events, the book shows how the Senate cooperated with, and at times subtly manipulated, emperors. Beginning with the Senate's composition and internal procedures, the book progresses to its legislative and judicial functions, ultimately assessing its gradual decline and legacy.

Utilizing primary sources like senatorial decrees and writings from historians like Tacitus, alongside modern scholarship, the book offers a unique perspective on the Senate as an active agent in Roman history. This analysis provides insights into political institutions, power dynamics, and checks and balances, relevant not only to students of Roman history, political science, and legal history but also to those interested in the broader implications for modern political systems.

    On Forgiveness

This is an essay on forgiveness, not in the religious sense, but in a purely secular meaning, as in, when one person forgives another person for something they did wrong. The primary focus is on self-forgiveness, where a person forgives themselves, a concept which this essay explains as "moral bankruptcy," using debts and credits and bankruptcy and economics and finance as a metaphor for the moral debts and moral credits that you owe to yourself and to others, that you owe it to yourself to be a good person, and you owe it to other people to be good to them, and, where you fail, you owe them a debt. The human brain evolved in such a way that humans tend to subconsciously seek to repay moral debts through the infliction of emotional pain, either inflicting emotional pain upon the self for debts owed to self (guilt), inflicting pain upon the self for debts owed to others (shame), or inflicting pain upon others for debts they owe to you (anger). This essay, despite being atheistic and secular in nature, does explore forgiveness in the context of areas that are commonly thought of as religious sins: lust, greed, pride, envy, and evil, as well as shame and guilt. The key central idea is that self-forgiveness, "moral bankruptcy," can help set you free from any guilt, shame, and anger that is holding you back in your life, and forgiveness will enable you to live a happier life, by giving you the confidence to act, and to achieve, with a greater resistance to fear of feeling guilt or shame if you fail, thereby tranquilizing fear of rejection or fear of failure or fear of disappointment. This theory of emotions will define honor, emotional maturity, self-esteem, and confidence, as well as explaining all of the seven major emotions: happiness, sadness, love, fear, guilt, shame, and anger. This book is cold, logical, no-nonsense wisdom about forgiveness, and is not mere wishy-washy empty generalities like most self-help books.

At Terezín, many children sang for the Nazi officials and the Red Cross. They were used as propaganda tools, between 1943 and 1944, to make the world believe that Hitler had given a "paradise" to the Jews. Only around 100 of the 15,000 innocent people who passed through this transit camp survived.
Ela Stein Weissberger, deported at the age of 11, is one of the few survivors. In Hans Krása's opera Brundibár (The Bumblebee) performed at the camp, she played the role of the Cat, the rebellious animal who attacks the mustached monster in the hope of winning the war! Her poignant testimony gives voice once again to the courageous, hopeful children who left 4,500 drawings, diaries and poems at Terezín.
Like an internal road movie, the author offers a parallel narrative—she looks back on her own family history, her search for Ela, her anecdotes from the shooting of a documentary film, and she speaks up for all children targeted by hatred.

    Danger Zone - The Coming...

It has become conventional wisdom that America and China are running a "superpower marathon." Yet Hal Brands and Michael Beckley pose a counterintuitive question: What if the sharpest phase of that competition is more like a decade-long sprint?

The Sino-American contest is driven by clashing geopolitical interests and a stark ideological dispute over whether authoritarianism or democracy will dominate the twenty-first century. But both history and China's current trajectory suggest that this rivalry will reach its moment of maximum danger in the 2020s.

China is at a perilous moment: strong enough to violently challenge the existing order, yet losing confidence that time is on its side. Witness its aggression toward Taiwan, its record-breaking military buildup, and its efforts to dominate the critical technologies that will shape the world's future.

The Chinese challenge will most likely prove more manageable than many pessimists currently believe—but during the 2020s, the pace of Sino-American conflict will accelerate, and the prospect of war will be frighteningly real. America, Brands and Beckley argue, will still need a sustainable approach to winning a protracted global competition.
