  Sir Arthur Charles Clarke (December 16, 1917 - March 19, 2008) was a British science fiction writer, science writer, futurist, inventor, undersea explorer, television series host, and influential proponent of space travel. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1968 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, widely regarded as one of the most influential films of all time. For many years Clarke, Robert Heinlein, and Isaac Asimov were known as the "Big Three" of science fiction. The following is a speech Clarke gave at a reception for the 2001 film release.

  Neem Karoli Baba known to his followers as Maharaj-ji - was a great Hindu guru, mystic, and devotee of Lord Hanuman. He is very well known outside India for being the spiritual master of a number of prominent Americans who traveled to India in the 1960s and 70s, including spiritual teachers Ram Dass, Bhagavan Das, and musicians Krishna Das and Jai Uttal. His ashrams are in India, and in Taos, New Mexico. Maharaji was a lifelong adept of bhakti-yoga and encouraged service to others (seva) as the highest form of unconditional devotion to God. 
   
  There can be no biography of him. Facts are few, stories many. He seems to have been known by different names in many parts of India, appearing and disappearing through the years. His non-Indian devotees of recent years knew him as Neem Karoli Baba, but mostly as “Maharajji” – a nickname so commonplace in India that one can often hear a tea vendor addressed thus. Just as he said, he was "nobody". He gave no discourses; the briefest, simplest stories were his teachings. Usually, he sat or lay on a wooden bench wrapped in a plaid blanket while a few devotees sat around him. Visitors came and went; they were given food, a few words, a nod, a pat on the head or back, and they were sent away. There was gossip and laughter for he loved to joke. Orders for running the ashram were given, usually in a piercing yell across the compound. Sometimes he sat in silence, absorbed in another world to which we could not follow, but bliss and peace poured down on us. Who he was was no more than the experience of him.   1 - Mayflower: In 1620, a group of English families, known now as the Pilgrims, were carried from England to the New World on the Mayflower. When the Mayflower finally showed up in America on November twenty-first, 1620, it had 102 guests and a team of around 30 on board and was anchored off Cape Cod. 
  The Pilgrims, as opposed to their Puritan coworkers, chose to break away from the Church of England because of its Roman Catholic heritage and the church's hesitation to reform, requiring them to pray in personal instead of in the church. In 1608, a group of English families left England for the Netherlands, where they could practice their faith without fear of persecution. As early as 1620, the Plymouth Group population had determined to cross the Atlantic to the New World, which they viewed as a "new Promised Land." 
  2 - Titanic: At the time of her first journey from Southampton to N.Y. City, RMS Titanic hit an iceberg and died in the North Atlantic Ocean on April fifteenth, 1912. An overall of 2,224 guests and team were reported to have been on board when the ship sank, making it one of the absolute worst single ship catastrophes and the absolute worst peacetime superliner or cruise liner sinking to date. As a result of the general public's interest in the after-effects, the mishap has acted as a structure for the category of catastrophe movies. 
  The RMS Titanic was the second of 3 Olympic-class ocean liners run by the White Star Line when she began service in the year 1912. Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast produced her. That mishap said the life of the shipyard's Chief Naval Designer, Thomas Andrews.
