Sinopse

Faith Warriors explores the intricate history of religious warfare, examining how faith has fueled military action across diverse cultures and eras. The book emphasizes that religious warfare isn't merely fanaticism, but a complex phenomenon rooted in specific historical and sociopolitical circumstances. By understanding these contexts, the book moves beyond simplistic characterizations to appreciate the multifaceted nature of religious violence.

It investigates motivations behind religious warfare, the strategies employed in holy battles, and their lasting impact on religious institutions. This study presents a historical overview of key religious conflicts, from the Crusades to Islamic conquests, analyzing sociopolitical conditions and theological justifications.

The book is structured in three parts: defining religious warfare, examining case studies across history, and synthesizing findings to understand contemporary conflicts. Ultimately, Faith Warriors offers insights into conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue, essential for anyone seeking to comprehend the connection between religion and violence.

Beyond 1619 brings an Atlantic and hemispheric perspective to the year 1619 as a marker of American slavery's origins and the beginnings of the Black experience in what would become the United States by situating the roots of racial slavery in a broader, comparative context.

In recent years, an extensive public dialogue regarding the long shadow of racism in the United States has pushed Americans to confront the insidious history of race-based slavery and its aftermath, with 1619—the year that the first recorded enslaved persons of African descent arrived in British North America—taking center stage as its starting point. Yet this dialogue has narrowed our understanding of slavery, race, and their repercussions to the U.S. context. Beyond 1619 showcases the results when scholars examine and put into conversation multiple empires, regions, peoples, and cultures to get a more complete view of the rise of racial slavery in the Americas.

Painting racial slavery's emergence on a hemispheric canvas, and in one compact volume, provides historical context beyond the 1619 moment for discussions of slavery, racism, antiracism, freedom, and lasting inequalities. This volume shines new light on these topics and illustrates the centrality of racial slavery, and contests over its rise, in nearly every corner of the early modern Atlantic World.

Stalking the Great Killer is the story of Arkansas's struggle to control tuberculosis, and how the state became a model in its treatment of the disease.

To place the story of tuberculosis in Arkansas in historical perspective, the authors trace the origins of the disease. Arkansas suffered some of the worst ravages of the disease, and the authors argue that many of the improvements in the state's medical infrastructure grew out of the desperate need to control it.

In the early twentieth century, Arkansas established a sanatorium and thirty years later, the segregated Black sanitorium. These institutions helped slow the disease but at a cost: removed from families and communities, patients suffered from the isolation. Joseph Bates saw this when he delivered an uncle to the sanitorium in the 1940s. In the 1960s, Bates, now a physician, and his colleague Paul Reagan overcame a resistant medical-political system to develop a new approach to treating the disease.

In the age of Covid-19, this history offers valuable lessons about community involvement in public health, the potential efficacy of public-private partnerships, and the importance of leadership in the battle to eradicate disease.

For perspective on our own times and how we got here, it helps to listen to wise guides from other eras. In An Infinite Fountain of Light, the renowned American historian George Marsden illuminates the landscape with wisdom from one such mentor: Jonathan Edwards. Drawing on his deep expertise on Edwards and American culture, Marsden explains where Edwards stood within his historical context and sets forth key points of his complex thought. By also considering Benjamin Franklin and George Whitefield, two of Edwards's most influential contemporaries, Marsden unpacks the competing cultural and religious impulses that have shaped our times. In contrast, Edwards offered us an exhilarating view of the centrality of God's beauty and love. Christians' love for God, he taught, can be the guiding love of our lives, opening us to transformative joy and orienting all our lesser loves. There is an infinite fullness of all possible good in God, a fullness of every perfection, of all excellency and beauty, and of infinite happiness, wrote Edwards. This infinite fountain of light should, diffusing its excellent fullness, pour forth light all around. With Marsden's guidance, listeners will discover how Edwards's insights can renew our own vision of the divine, of creation, and of ourselves.
