Sinopsis

Antarctica Laws explores the intricate legal and political systems governing Antarctica, highlighting international cooperation and environmental stewardship on this unique continent. It examines how the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) has successfully maintained peace and promoted scientific research, while also addressing the growing pressures from climate change and potential resource exploitation. The book reveals how the ATS, established in 1959, suspended territorial claims, designating Antarctica as a zone dedicated to scientific exploration. The study of Antarctica offers valuable insights into international relations and conflict resolution.

The book delves into the evolution of Antarctic governance, focusing on the legal mechanisms designed to safeguard its fragile environment. It critically evaluates the effectiveness of existing environmental protection measures, considering the impacts of climate change, pollution, and tourism.

The book analyzes the legal regime governing resource activities, identifying loopholes and assessing the potential environmental and geopolitical consequences of resource exploitation.

Structured to provide a comprehensive understanding, the book progresses from the historical development of the ATS to an analysis of resource management and environmental protection, culminating in proposals for enhanced governance. By integrating legal analysis with environmental science and political strategy, Antarctica Laws provides a unique perspective, offering recommendations for strengthening Antarctic governance in the face of future challenges.

The Untold Magellan Story: Second Edition is not a work of fiction—it's a gripping journey through real history. In a bold and imaginative narrative, acclaimed historian Charles Avila brings the legendary Ferdinand Magellan across the Great Divide to speak directly to you, offering personal insights into his life, unprecedented achievements, and hard-earned reflections from five centuries past.
Through Avila’s masterful storytelling, Magellan recounts the epic voyage that changed the world: the first circumnavigation of the globe, the discovery of the strait that bears his name, his awe at the Magellanic Clouds, his regret over the naming of an island, and his unintended role in the birth of a nation.
This second edition goes further, revisiting the colonial legacy left in the wake of European expansion. In a striking historical turn, even Pope Francis—before his passing—challenged the long-held doctrine of the “right of discovery,” a decree once issued by Pope Alexander VI. Was Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines a heroic feat or an immoral act of imperialism?
With fresh insights and provocative questions, this book invites you to rethink history through the eyes of the man who helped shape it. Read the story. Or better yet—listen as Magellan tells it himself.

The Celts are one of the most well-known groups in Europe and one of the least understood. Depending on which classifications are used, the Celts are also one of the oldest civilizations in Europe. In the centuries before Christ, the Celts were spread out across much of continental Europe, and though they are mostly identified with Gaul, evidence suggests they also spread as far as Portugal. Though they were spread out across Europe before the height of the Roman Empire, most people associate the Celts with the British Isles today, particularly Ireland and Scotland. After they had been relegated to those smaller regions as a result of the Romans and other migrations, the culture of the Celts as it is currently understood began to congeal during the Early Middle Ages, and Celtic culture, folklore, and legend have all become inextricably intertwined with Irish history and British history as a whole.
Historically, Celtic cultures differ from their English and French neighbors in a number of ways, including social organization, language, values and economic systems, but one of the most captivating of these has always been their myths. Celtic Myths, which can be read in translation without needing special training in grammar, are more accessible than the Celtic languages, and unlike the other distinctive features that have faded over the centuries, myths still have their immediacy and power when read today. While much has undoubtedly been lost from the ancient Celts over time, medieval manuscripts help scholars understand how Celtic myths have reached the form they have today. Like many ancient belief systems, Celtic mythology shares Indo-European roots, meaning Celtic beliefs have cousins in related societies like the Norse, Greeks, Romans and Slavs, with a foundation of shared mythmaking that goes back several millennia.

The Iran Hostage Crisis did not emerge in isolation but was the culmination of a series of events that built tension between the United States and Iran over the course of several years. At the heart of this turmoil was the downfall of the Pahlavi monarchy and the rise of the Islamic Republic, a shift that drastically altered Iran's relationship with the West. The turning point came in 1979 when the Iranian Revolution ousted the U.S.-backed Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and brought Ayatollah Khomeini to power. While the revolution was a victory for many Iranians seeking an end to decades of autocratic rule and foreign influence, it created an atmosphere of political uncertainty, particularly regarding U.S.-Iranian relations.
The United States had long supported the Shah, who was seen as a crucial ally in the Middle East during the Cold War. In return, the Shah implemented policies that favored American economic and military interests, while also suppressing dissent within Iran. However, his reign became increasingly unpopular among Iranians, particularly the religious clerics and the working class, who viewed his modernization policies as an imposition of Western culture and values. By 1978, protests and demonstrations had erupted across Iran, eventually leading to the Shah’s exile in January 1979.
In the wake of the Shah’s departure, Iran underwent a dramatic transformation. The revolutionary movement, initially diverse in its goals, quickly coalesced under Khomeini’s leadership. Khomeini’s vision of an Islamic Republic, where political power was rooted in Shi’a religious authority, resonated with a wide segment of the population. His rhetoric condemned not only the Shah’s regime but also U.S. imperialism, which was seen as a driving force behind Iran’s oppressive system. Khomeini’s calls for a return to Islamic principles and the removal of foreign influence became central tenets of the revolution.

How do we become better people? Initiatives such as New Year's resolutions, vision boards, thirty-day plans, and self-help books often fail to compel us to live differently. We settle for small goals—frugal spending, less yelling at the kids, more time at the gym—but we are called to something far greater. We are created to be holy.

Award-winning author Jessica Hooten Wilson explains that learning to hear the call of holiness requires cultivating a new imagination—one rooted in the act of reading. Learning to read with eyes attuned to the saints who populate great works of literature moves us toward holiness, where God opens up a way of living that extends far beyond what we can conjure for ourselves. Literature has the power to show us what a holy life looks like, and these depictions often scandalize even as they shape our imagination. As such, careful reading becomes a sort of countercultural spiritual discipline.

The book includes devotionals, prayers, wisdom from the saints, and more to help individuals and groups cultivate a saintly imagination.
