Sinopsis

"Transparency Requirements" explores the critical role of government transparency in modern democracy, focusing on how transparency laws, like the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), function in practice. It highlights that while access to information is unprecedented, misinformation poses challenges to government accountability. The book investigates the legal landscape governing access to public records, including the procedures for requesting information and the obligations of government agencies to disclose data. Did you know that transparency legislation originated in post-World War II efforts? These laws have evolved significantly, driven by investigative journalism and demands for accountability. The book adopts a combined approach of legal analysis and practical guidance, making it valuable for a broad audience, including journalists, students, and concerned citizens. It progresses logically, beginning with core concepts and then delving into specific aspects of FOIA, access procedures, and agency responsibilities. It also addresses current challenges like the rise of "fake news" and the increasing need for international cooperation. The central argument emphasizes that robust transparency laws are vital for fostering public trust.

Once designed to amplify the voices of farmers, laborers, and the underrepresented, the Philippine party-list system has now become the ultimate low-risk, high-reward investment for the well-connected. In Partylist for Profit: How the Rich Hijacked a System for the Poor, A.A. Castor peels back the glossy surface of legislative charity to expose the machinery of legalized profiteering, dynastic expansion, and quiet political laundering.
With deadpan seriousness and a dose of dark humor, this book walks readers through the insider's playbook of how to build, fund, and quietly control a party-list with as little accountability—and as much profit—as possible. From choosing a vague advocacy ("OFWs" or "transport workers," anyone?) to securing alphabet-friendly names for ballot advantage, to recycling nominees across election cycles and repackaging greed as governance, this is not a how-to—this is a how-it's-done.
Perfect for political junkies, aspiring operators, or just disillusioned citizens looking to finally understand why nothing ever changes, Partylist for Profit isn't just a book—it's a public service announcement disguised as satire.
Learn how power is bought, maintained, and quietly passed down—not through revolution, but registration. After all, in today's politics, you don't need a platform. You just need a seat.

A leading Israeli American scholar of the Holocaust explores and explains his native country's intensifying turn toward violence and exclusion. The distinguished historian Omer Bartov was born on a kibbutz, grew up in Tel Aviv, and served in the Israel Defense Forces during the Yom Kippur War. He went on to become a leading scholar of the German army and the Holocaust, before turning his attention to his native country. In Israel: What Went Wrong?, Bartov sketches the tragic transformation of Zionism, a movement that sought to emancipate European Jewry from oppression, into a state ideology of ethno-nationalism. How is it possible, he asks, that a state founded in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust, an event that gave legitimacy to a national home for the Jews, stands credibly accused of perpetrating large-scale war crimes? How do we come to terms with the fact that Israel’s war of destruction is being conducted with the support, laced with denial and indifference, of so many of its Jewish citizens?Tracing the roots of the violent events currently unfolding in Israel and the occupied territories, Bartov tracks his country's moral tribulations and considers the origins of Zionism, the intertwining of Israel’s independence with Palestinian displacement, the politics of the Holocaust, controversies over the term "genocide," and the uncertain future. The result is a searing and urgent critique that addresses today’s debates over Zionism and the future of Israel with rigor and depth.

At universities, professors are increasingly being dismissed or demoted from high positions for allegedly disruptive behaviors. But when is a professor disruptive? In the media, you read about unpopular statements, false attitudes, bullying or abuse of power. But that is only part of the story. This book looks at the structures behind the cases and shows that the dismissals repeatedly affect certain groups of people. Instead of performance orientation, a 'right to certification' is gaining ground. Instead of academic freedom, there is increasing pressure to conduct research only in line with certain political ideologies. Based on their empirical surveys, Heike Egner and Anke Uhlenwinkel present worrying findings and remind us of the once seemingly unshakeable principles of free research and free teaching at our universities.

Among other things, the authors have examined the questions of which groups of people were primarily affected by the dismissals, what accusations were made against them, what the respective course of proceedings was, and what role the media played. The findings unearthed in the process are disturbing, for the facts suggest that not only has there been a sharp increase in the number of professors who have been prematurely removed from university service against their will, but that qualitatively questionable developments have also been observed. Those affected seem to belong particularly often to certain sociological groups whose members are presumed to have been able to pursue a career in academia only through extraordinary personal effort and talent, to feel committed to the ethos of achievement, and to be particularly attached to the traditional, Humboldtian understanding of academia.
