Sinopsis

Objects that make the past feel real, from a stone axe head to a piece of John Brown’s scaffold—includes photos.   History isn’t just about abstract “isms”—it’s the story of real events that happened to real people. In Touching America’s History, Meredith Mason Brown uses a collection of such objects, drawing from his own family’s heirlooms, to summon up major developments in America’s history.   The objects range in date from a Pequot stone axe head, probably made before the Pequot War in 1637, to the western novel Dwight Eisenhower was reading while waiting for the weather to clear so the Normandy Invasion could begin, to a piece of a toilet bowl found in the bombed-out wreckage of Hitler’s home in 1945. Among the other historically evocative items are a Kentucky rifle carried by Col. John Floyd, killed by Indians in 1783; a letter from George Washington explaining why he will not be able to attend the Constitutional Convention; shavings from the scaffold on which John Brown was hanged; a pistol belonging to Gen. William Preston, in whose arms Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston bled to death after being shot at the Battle of Shiloh; and the records of a court-martial for the killing by an American officer of a Filipino captive during the Philippine War. Together, these objects call to mind nothing less than the birth, growth, and shaping of what is now America.   “Clearly written, buttressed by maps and portraits, Brown's book regales while showing the objectivity and nuance of a historian.”—Library Journal   “A whole new way of doing history…a novel form of story-telling.”—Joseph J. Ellis, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation

“A consummate and loving tribute to canines as well as a comprehensive history, seamlessly blending facts, anecdotes, and ideas.” —Kirkus Reviews In this revelatory book, Mark Derr looks at the ways in which we have used canines—as sled dogs and sheepdogs, hounds and Seeing Eye dogs, guard dogs, show dogs, and bomb-sniffing dogs—as he tracks changes in American culture and society. A Dog’s History of America weaves a remarkable tapestry of heroism, betrayal, tragedy, kindness, abuse, and unique companionship. The result is an enlightening perspective on American history through the eyes of humanity’s best friend.   “Includes stories of heroic dogs like Satan, who in WWI dodged bullets to take a message that saved a garrison under fire; the Alaskan sled team whose 1920s ‘serum run’ saved a town from diphtheria; and dogs in the Pacific who detected hidden Japanese snipers in WWII . . . A humbling reminder of the dog’s remarkable spirit and intelligence in the face, even, of human cruelty.” —Kirkus Reviews   “A history of the dog in the New World . . . fascinating.” —Booklist    “Takes a dog’s-eye view of American history, beginning with speculations on the dog’s first appearance in the Americas tens of thousands of years ago.” —Publishers Weekly    “Scrupulously researched, anecdotally rich, historically provocative and wide-ranging . . . From 768 to 800, Charlemagne, also referred to as Charles the Great, was King of the Franks, King of the Lombards, and Emperor of the Romans. Charlemagne combined many western and main Europe at the time of the Early Middle Ages. Since the fall of the Western Roman Empire 3 centuries before, he was the first acknowledged emperor to rule from western Europe. The Carolingian Empire is the name given to Charlemagne's broadening Frankish world. Antipope Paschal the Third later canonized him.Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon had an oldest child, Charlemagne, who was born before their main marriage.Following his dad's death in the year 768, he ended up being king of the Franks, at first as co-ruler with his brother Carloman I till the latter's death in the year 771. He followed his dad's position to the papacy as sole king and became its protector, driving the Lombards out of northern Italy and leading an attack into Muslim Spain. He waged a project against the Saxons to his east, requiring them to convert to Christendom or face death, resulting in events like the Massacre of Verden. He reached the peak of his power in the year 800, when Pope Leo the Third crowned him "Emperor of the Romans" on Christmas Day at Rome's Old St. Peter's Basilica.
