The harrowing tale of a revolutionary era 16-year girl who rode horseback through the dark of night warning of an impending British attack on the town of Danbury, Connecticut and summoning the 7th Regiment of the Dutchess County Militia to assemble near her family home. Sybil Ludington was the daughter of Colonel Henry Ludington, a revered military officer. The story chronicles various historical accounts of her upbringing and later years. One such is her clever plan in having her seven siblings march back and forth in front of a window in the family's home to dissuade a group of men who had arrived in hopes of claiming a bounty for the capture of her father. It tells of how she was a pioneer, having been one of only a few women to own and run a tavern after the passing of her husband. Contextual side stories offer further perspective on key details, locations, and people referenced in Sybil's story. Archival photographs, drawings, and paintings are chronologically arranged, adding visual context to her compelling story, as well as the inclusion of further reading and website recommendations, maps, glossary, and index. Content developed for young readers, interest level grades 4-6 (reading level, grade 5).

A fascinating look into the life and times of civil rights activist and journalist, Ida B. Wells. Born to slave parents in 1862, Ida became a teacher while still in her teens, later attending classes at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1883, she boarded a train in Memphis. The conductor informed her she would need to move to the blacks-only car, despite the Civil Rights Act of 1875 outlawing segregation such as this. After refusing, she was physically removed by three men. This marked Ida B. Well's transition from teacher to civil rights activist. Throughout her amazing adult life, she traveled throughout the country, and abroad, advocating for African American rights, publishing stories about the cause, and shedding light the horrors of lynching. While she married and had four children, she continued as one of the nation's leading activists, fighting for what she believed in until her death in 1931. Contextual side stories offer further perspective on key details, locations, and people referenced in Wells's story. Archival photographs, drawings, and paintings are chronologically arranged, adding visual context to her remarkable life and career, as well as the inclusion of further reading and website recommendations, maps, glossary, and index. Content developed for young readers, interest level grades 4-6 (reading level, grade 5).

The Comedy (in Italian, Commedia), or Divine Comedy (Divina Commedia), is a poem by Dante Alighieri written in tercets strung together in hendecasyllables in the Florentine vernacular. Composed, according to critics, between 1303 and 1321, the Commedia is Dante's most famous work and one of the most important testimonies to medieval civilization. Known and studied throughout the world, it is considered one of the masterpieces of literature. In his edition printed in Venice in 1555, Gabriele Giolito de Ferrari (here painted by Titian in 1554) first gave the title "Divina" to Dante's Comedy, which has remained so to this day.The Divine Comedy is generally considered to be the first great text in Italian: the language in which it is written has had a considerable influence on the peninsula's modern idiom. In writing his work, Dante was largely inspired by the bloody conflict he himself experienced in Italy, pitting the Guelphs (Guelfi) against the Ghibellines (Ghibellini) (1125-1300). From a literary point of view, Dante makes explicit reference to the Aeneid and the Apocalypse of Paul, the two best-known ancient texts in the genre of tales of journeys to the Underworld. The poem is divided into three parts called cantiche (Italian plural for cantica): Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory) and Paradiso (Paradise), each composed of thirty-three songs (except Hell, which contains a preliminary song). The poet narrates a journey through the three supra-terrestrial kingdoms, culminating in a vision of the Trinity. His imaginary, allegorical depiction of the Christian afterlife is a pinnacle of the medieval worldview developed by the Roman Catholic Church.

Amy feels like everything is going wrong. For a start, she's just found out she isn't going to the same high school as everyone else. Add to that her annoying younger brothers, Pops' worsening dementia and Cassie, her supposed best friend, being meaner than ever, and Amy's summer is not looking promising. Especially when Mum tells her they're moving in with Gran and Pops for the holidays … all the way on the other side of town.
But then she discovers who lives over the road from her grandparents: Jay, the kind, quiet boy from school. Soon Amy realizes that friendship isn't always about who talks the most and the loudest, who does the most exciting things or throws the coolest parties. Sometimes a friend is just someone to talk to, someone to listen. But when outside pressures start to creep back in, can Amy hang on to her summer of silver linings?
A humorous and heartfelt story of new friends, fresh starts and silver linings, for fans of Jacqueline Wilson, Lisa Thompson and Cath Howe.
