Sinopsis

May Sinclair's "Uncanny Stories" is a masterful collection that delves into the realms of the psychological and the supernatural, blending stark realism with eerie elements of the uncanny. Written during the early 20th century, Sinclair employs a narrative style that intersects modernist techniques with traditional storytelling, compellingly engaging with themes of identity, perception, and the human psyche. The stories challenge readers to confront their own fears and insecurities, embodying the tension prevalent in post-Victorian literature while foreshadowing the existential explorations of later writers. Sinclair, a pivotal figure in feminist literature and a contemporary of Virginia Woolf, used her literary career to explore the complexities of human emotion and consciousness. Her deep interest in psychology, influenced by her relationship with the burgeoning field of psychoanalysis, informs the unsettling atmosphere that permeates her work. Drawing from her own life experiences and observations of societal norms, Sinclair's stories reflect a personal and societal journey through the labyrinth of fear and the unknown. "Uncanny Stories" is highly recommended for readers seeking to immerse themselves in thought-provoking and unsettling narratives that transcend mere horror. Sinclair's incisive exploration of the human condition reveals the complexities that lurk beneath the surface of everyday life, making this collection essential for both scholars of modern literature and casual readers alike.

Brought to you by Altrusian Grace Media and narrated by Matthew Schmitz, and includes a fully immersive cinematic music score.
"The Cats of Ulthar" is a short story written by American fantasy author H. P. Lovecraft in June 1920. In the tale, an unnamed narrator relates the story of how a law forbidding the killing of cats came to be in a town called Ulthar. As the narrative goes, the city is home to an old couple who enjoy capturing and killing the townspeople's cats. When a caravan of wanderers passes through the city, the kitten of an orphan (Menes) traveling with the band disappears. Upon hearing of the couple's violent acts towards cats, Menes invokes a prayer before leaving town that causes the local felines to swarm the cat-killers' house and devour them. Upon witnessing the result, the local politicians pass a law forbidding the killing of cats.
Influenced by Lord Dunsany, the tale was a personal favorite of Lovecraft's and has remained popular since his death. Considered one of the best short stories of Lovecraft's early period, aspects of "The Cats of Ulthar" would be referenced again in the author's works The Other Gods and The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. It was first published in the literary journal Tryout in November 1920 and now resides in the public domain.

A "genuinely scary" horror debut written in "prose so beautiful you won't want to rush" about a boy who transforms into a monster, a monster who tries to be a man, and the people who love him in every form he takes (Ana Reyes)

Grieving mother Magos cuts out a piece of her deceased eleven-year-old son Santiago's lung. Acting on fierce maternal instinct and the dubious logic of an old folktale, she nurtures the lung until it gains sentience, growing into the carnivorous little Monstrilio she keeps hidden within the walls of her family's decaying Mexico City estate. Eventually, Monstrilio begins to resemble the Santiago he once was, but his innate impulses—though curbed by his biological and chosen family's communal care—threaten to destroy this fragile second chance at life.

A thought-provoking meditation on grief, acceptance, and the monstrous sides of love and loyalty, Gerardo Sámano Córdova blends bold imagination and evocative prose with deep emotional rigor. Told in four acts that span the globe from Brooklyn to Berlin, Monstrilio offers, with uncanny clarity, a cathartic and precise portrait of being human.
