Septimius Severus was Rome's black emperor. Born in the blistering heat of a North African spring in Leptis Magna AD 145, he died in the freezing cold of a northern British winter in York in AD 211. A giant of an emperor, whose career can be counted in superlatives, Severus was in power at the height of Rome's might. He led the largest army to ever campaign in Britain, comprising 50,000 men, part of a Roman military establishment which peaked at 33 legions under his rule.

Born into the richest family, in the richest part of the Roman Empire, Severus monumentalised his rule across the empire. He visited - and often fought in - every region. Where he did, he left a mighty legacy in the built environment, for example in Rome where much of the Forum Romanum and most of the imperial palaces are Severan. In North Africa, his hometown of Leptis Magna is all Severan, as are the Roman cities at the Atlas mountains. In London, the land walls that still define the City's Square Mile were delineated under his rule. Visitors to the under croft at York Minster can stand where he died.

Septimius Severus was one of the greatest warrior emperors, a hard man who almost died in battle several times and whose attitude is reflected in his deathbed advice to two sons: 'Be of one mind with your family, enrich the soldiers, and despise the rest.'

Just like in the squatter camp in Atteridgeville, there was no electricity in our new home. But here it was very different: it was safe. Only years later I figured out why the crime rate was so low in our village: there was nothing to steal.

Born in Chains is a first-hand account of living in abject poverty in South Africa. Clinton Chauke was born in 1994 into a Vatsonga household and has faced all the challenges of growing up at the edges of society: first in rural Limpopo, then in a village bordering the Kruger National Park, and finally in a squatter camp near Pretoria.

Navigating a world of racism and tribalism and confronting urban life as a country ‘bumpkin’, the author depicts the lifelines and pitfalls of a young life: going to school, coming to terms with tradition, religion and politics, becoming a man and – ultimately – finding his identity as a young black person in South Africa.

Uncompromising, honest and witty, Chauke’s memoir is a story of hope and perseverance and of succeeding against all the odds.

"Children with diabetes can live full, happy, productive lives. I hope my story can stand as proof of that fact."
Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age seven, Wendy Louise Novak had to create her own path in a world defined by stigma, struggle, and hope.
With little public awareness of her condition, Wendy's only role model was her fiercely independent father, who grew up in an era when diabetes meant a difficult, and often short, life. He taught her to "follow the rules" and stay self-reliant. That sense of independence carried Wendy through college to a successful career, globetrotting excitement, and a whirlwind romance with her husband, David.
Wendy built a loving family as she navigated the highs and lows of a condition that was still widely misunderstood. Despite tough times, she learned to balance following the rules with following her passions, saying, "I never wanted to be the kind of person who stayed home and worried about whether or not I could take it, and so I didn't."
Today, Wendy is the face of the Wendy Novak Diabetes Institute, which supports groundbreaking clinical services, education, and research to ensure young people with diabetes can thrive. In this honest but uplifting account of a life well lived, Wendy shares what she has learned, including practical tips for managing diabetes.
With a foreword by the author's husband, businessman, and philanthropist David Novak, Diabetes and Me shows patients and families that a diagnosis doesn't define your life.
"There are always ways to experience the joys in life, no matter what it throws at you."

    Naturalism - Reality Through the...

Naturalism is a philosophical worldview that asserts that everything that exists, and every phenomenon that occurs, is a product of natural laws and processes. It contends that the universe operates without the need for supernatural explanations or interventions. In essence, naturalism posits that the natural world, as observed through science, is all there is. This perspective has deep roots in both philosophy and science, offering a framework for understanding reality that relies heavily on empirical evidence and reasoned inquiry.
At its core, naturalism rejects supernatural forces, divine beings, or metaphysical entities as explanations for natural phenomena. Instead, it emphasizes that everything in the universe, from the smallest particles to the vastness of the cosmos, can be understood in terms of physical, biological, and chemical laws. Naturalism also suggests that humans, as part of the natural world, are subject to the same laws governing the rest of the universe. This view aligns closely with the scientific method, which is built upon observation, experimentation, and the continual refinement of theories based on evidence.
In defining naturalism, it is essential to recognize its distinction from other philosophical frameworks. Unlike idealism, which asserts that reality is primarily mental or spiritual, naturalism asserts the primacy of the material world. Similarly, it differs from supernaturalism, which attributes the workings of the universe to forces beyond natural laws, such as gods or spirits. Naturalism’s embrace of the empirical allows it to form the foundation for scientific inquiry, fostering advancements in fields ranging from physics and biology to psychology and medicine.

Among the Living and the Dead -...

"It's long been assumed of the region where my grandmother was born . . . that at some point each year the dead will come home," Inara Verzemnieks writes in this exquisite story of war, exile, and reconnection. Her grandmother's stories recalled one true home: the family farm left behind in Latvia, where, during WWII, her grandmother Livija and her grandmother's sister, Ausma, were separated. They would not see each other again for more than fifty years. Raised by her grandparents in Washington State, Inara grew up among expatriates, scattering smuggled Latvian sand over the coffins of the dead, singing folk songs about a land she had never visited.

When Inara discovers the scarf Livija wore when she left home, in a box of her grandmother's belongings, this tangible remnant of the past points the way back to the remote village where her family broke apart. There it is said the suspend their exile once a year for a pilgrimage through forests and fields to the homes they left behind. Coming to know Ausma and the trauma of her exile to Siberia under Stalin, Inara pieces together Livija's survival through years as a refugee. Weaving these two parts of the family story together in spellbinding, lyrical prose, she gives us a profound and cathartic account of loss, survival, resilience, and love.
