  "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg" is a piece of short fiction by Mark Twain. It first appeared in Harper's Monthly in December 1899, and was subsequently published by Harper & Brothers in the collection The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg and Other Stories and Sketches (1900). Some see this story "as a replay of the Garden of Eden story", and associate the corrupter of the town with Satan.Hadleyburg enjoys the reputation of being an "incorruptible" town known for its responsible, honest people that are trained to avoid temptation. However, at some point the people of Hadleyburg manage to offend a passing stranger, and he vows to get his revenge by corrupting the town.

  Ellen Anderson Gholson Glasgow was born on 22nd April 1873 in Richmond, Virginia. 
   
  She published her first novel ‘The Descendant’ anonymously in 1897 at age 24.  
   
  As a ‘Southern’ writer much of her work integrates themes of class and gender struggles, many of them based on her own experiences and relationships.  She wrote realistically of the changing contemporary South; very different from the then idealistic escapist fare after Reconstruction. 
   
  As the women's suffrage movement developed at the turn of the century Glasgow was very active, but later felt it had come at the wrong time for her, accordingly her enthusiasm waned although her later books did have heroines who displayed their ambitions in the social and political struggle. 
   
  In 1923 came her short story collection ‘The Shadowy Third & Other Stories’ which included ‘The Difference’, a classic tale of a marriage hitting a problem and the moral and realistic reaction to that. 
   
  Further works followed and, in 1941, she published ‘In This Our Life’.  This bold and progressive book on African-Americans, followed the central characters and portrayed the blatant injustices they faced in society.  It won the Pulitzer Prize the following year. 
   
  Ellen Anderson Gholson Glasgow died in her sleep at home on 21st November 1945. She was 72.

  "The Rout of the White Hussars" is an short story by Rudyard Kipling: This story was first published in the first edition of Plain Tales from the Hills in 1888 and was included in subsequent editions of this collection.The White Hussars were a first class cavalry regiment, who 'knew that they could walk round any Horse and through any Guns and over any Foot on the face of the earth.' They were particularly proud of their Regimental Band and of their Drum Horse who carried the silver kettle-drums. A new colonel takes over as Commanding Officer, and to the fury of the whole regiment insists on replacing the Drum Horse with what they see as a much inferior beast. One of the subalterns buys the horse, pretends to have it slaughtered, and mounts a skeleton on its back. One evening, while the horses are being watered after manoeuvres, the spectral-looking Drum Horse is seen riding towards his old comrades, and the regiment flees in disorder across the countryside. The Colonel, after much argument, is persuaded to bring the old horse back.
