Sinopsis

In "Mary Wollstonecraft's Original Stories," the esteemed feminist philosopher and early advocate for women's rights delves into a collection of enchanting tales that blend moral instruction with imaginative storytelling. This work emerges in a period when children's literature was blossoming, yet still largely conformed to didactic expectations. Wollstonecraft employs a distinctive literary style that challenges the prevailing norms by integrating vivid characterization and moral dilemmas, thereby inviting young readers to engage with philosophical ideas through the lens of personal experience and emotional development. Her stories embody the Enlightenment ideals of reason while concurrently critiquing contemporary societal values. Mary Wollstonecraft, renowned for her groundbreaking treatise "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman," uses her expertise as a pioneering thinker and educator to infuse her narratives with a profound ethical framework. Inspired by her own tumultuous experiences and a desire to cultivate the intellectual and moral capabilities of women and children, Wollstonecraft crafted these stories not simply as entertainment but as vehicles for social change. Her aspiration to elevate the status of women resonates throughout her writings, making them both relevant and revolutionary. "Mary Wollstonecraft's Original Stories" is a compelling read for anyone interested in the intersections of literature, philosophy, and social reform. Readers will appreciate how Wollstonecraft's narratives transcend mere children's literature, exploring enduring themes of autonomy, ethical responsibility, and human connection. This collection provides a rich context for understanding the evolution of feminist thought and remains a vital contribution to both literary and social discourse.

    Excerpt:

"When confidence in the Buddha’s enlightenment is strong in a person, the hindrances—sensuality, ill will, sloth and torpor, restlessness and anxiety, and uncertainty—are suppressed, the passions are dispersed, and the mind is bright and clear. There is no possibility for a disciple of the Buddha to fall into states of demerit so long as he has confidence in the Master and the truth: it is when uncertainty as regards what is good possess him that a disciple is assailed by influences that lead him away from the right path. The Buddha says that he watches a disciple so long as the disciple fails to produce confidence, but once the disciple produces confidence the Master stops watching the disciple knowing that he is self-warded and incapable of slacking.

"In the Dhamma, men are purified finally and completely, not by virtue and concentration, but by right understanding. Virtue and concentration are requisites for preparing the mind for right understanding. Therefore the Buddha praised the life lived with right understanding as the most excellent. How is that life developed? ..."

Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as L. M. Montgomery). Written for all ages, it has been considered a classic children's novel since the mid-20th century. Set in the late 19th century, the novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who is sent by mistake to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way through life with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town. Since its publication, Anne of Green Gables has been translated into at least 36 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies, making it one of the best selling books worldwide. It was the first of many novels; Montgomery wrote numerous sequels, and since her death another sequel has been published, as well as an authorized prequel titled Before Green Gables. This prequel was written in 2008 by Budge Wilson to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the book series. The original book is taught to students around the world. The book has been adapted as films, television films, and animated and live-action television series. Musicals and plays have also been created, with productions annually in Europe and Japan.
