Sinopse

In 'Half a Man' by Mary White Ovington, the author delves into the complexities of identity and self-discovery against the backdrop of racial tension in early 20th century America. Ovington's literary style is characterized by poignant prose and deep introspection, drawing readers into the internal struggles of the protagonist. The novel is a standout example of protest literature, shedding light on the discrimination faced by African Americans and biracial individuals during this turbulent time period. Ovington's use of vivid imagery and symbolism adds layers of depth to the narrative, inviting readers to explore themes of race, equality, and personal acceptance. Through the protagonist's journey of self-acceptance, Ovington challenges societal norms and prompts readers to question their own beliefs and biases. Mary White Ovington, a prominent civil rights activist and co-founder of the NAACP, brings a unique perspective to 'Half a Man', infusing the novel with her passion for social justice and equality. Her personal experiences and dedication to the fight for civil rights likely inspired the narrative, adding authenticity and emotional weight to the story. I highly recommend 'Half a Man' to readers interested in thought-provoking literature that explores race relations, personal identity, and the power of resilience in the face of adversity.

In this collection of poetry, written over half a lifetime, Hayley Ann Solomon focuses primarily on the pursuit of excellence, immortality achieved through finite life, love in all its forms, and social justice. As it waxes and wanes, the collection cycles through sequences of lyrical ballads, sonnets, elegies, haiku, snippets of nonsensical verse; all blended with a substantial dose of existential philosophy and social comment.
The collection covers a full spectrum, from the darkest psycho-social moments, to zeniths of absolute joy. The liberal use of consonance, assonance, alliteration, echoes and half-echoes, rhyme and cross-rhyme make for a style rich in sound-play. This, together with strong metrical awareness – very often iambic or trochaic pentameter and tetrameter – evokes a flow that is quite typically euphonic. There is therefore a sense of lyricism despite a broad diversity of topics and moods.
The anthology evolves to become a promise of regeneration, in synchrony with the phases of the moon, from which it takes its celestial title.

Through the enduring eye of Sherlock Holmes, noted historian Jeremy Black traces how Holmes and his milieu evolved in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books and how Holmes continues to resonate today. Black explores the context of Doyle's ideas and stories and why they struck such a chord with readers in London, and ultimately the world. He portrays a complex man with eclectic interests, from soccer to spiritualism, from cricket to divorce law reform. Standing twice for Parliament, Doyle was a committed meritocrat whose political experiences and values were expressed through his writings. Reading the Holmes stories through the lens of Doyle's multifaceted career, Black throws fresh light on the values expressed in them and how Holmes would have been perceived at the time. He traces the imperial strand in the Holmes stories and Doyle's treatment of America and Europe.

Drawing on a masterful knowledge both of Doyle's era and his writings, this entertaining and wide-ranging book uses the Holmes stories to bring Victorian England to vibrant life, a world where crimes large and small abound and where dark corners and well-lit drawing rooms alike hide villainy. Holmes was a hero and an inspiration for many a character who redefined the idea of detection and the detective, a private man of great public importance. Here is his story.

There was a real-life Friedrich Bhaer. In fact, Louisa May Alcott wanted to marry him and even start a school with him. This man appears in literal disguises in all of her novels. He is Friedrich in Little Women, Mac in Rose in Bloom and David in Work and many more. Henry and Louisa shared a deep friendship, was it more than friendship? In Little Women Jo's and Friedrich's age gap is 16 years. It is the same age difference as between Henry and Louisa.
One of the models for Jo and Friedrich might be Louisa's friend Elizabeth and her husband. Her life was surprisingly similar to the book Jo. She wasn't a writer, but there are parallels. Based on what I have found, her marriage with her lawyer husband was a happy one. She was devoted to the educational work and in the same way, as Jo does, she promoted co-education, for both male and female students. She became a dean of the university. Same way as Jo who becomes the matriarch of the Bhaer Academy in "Jo´s Boys"..
There is a very compelling case to be made that Henry David Thoreau was the real-life Friedrich Bhaer. Louisa once called her friend Emerson "The God of my idolatry" but it was Henry who merited her lifelong affection. The ties between Henry and the Alcotts are more extensive than one might expect. From the time when the Alcotts moved to Concord in March 1840 until Henry's passing in 1862. He was a frequent guest in the Alcott´s home taking tea or dinner with the family. Bronson who admired the young man's intellect often visited him in his hut at Walden Pond. If the connection between Henry and the Alcotts was strong, the connection between Louisa and Henry was even stronger
