Sinopse

In this comprehensive collection, Mary Shelley's works are curated to showcase the depth and breadth of her literary genius. Spanning novels, short stories, plays, travel writings, and biographical narratives, this anthology captures the evolution of Shelley's thought and style. Primarily known for her groundbreaking novel "Frankenstein," often hailed as the first science fiction work, Shelley's prose is characterized by its vivid imagery, psychological depth, and exploration of complex themes such as identity, creation, and the ramifications of ambition. The collection offers a lens into the romantic era, reflecting the cultural and philosophical shifts of her time, as well as Shelley's unique contributions to the Gothic genre and early feminist thought. Mary Shelley, the daughter of prominent thinkers William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, was indelibly influenced by her upbringing in a milieu that valued intellect and creativity. Her life experiences, including her tumultuous relationship with Percy Bysshe Shelley and the loss of her children, deeply informed her writing, allowing her to tackle profound existential themes with compassion and insight. This collection not only highlights her literary prowess but also illuminates her struggles and triumphs as a woman in a male-dominated literary landscape. For readers seeking a deep and nuanced understanding of one of literature's foremost figures, this premium collection is indispensable. Whether a long-time admirer of Shelley's innovative storytelling or a newcomer to her work, scholars and casual readers alike will find rich rewards in the pages of this anthology. Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

Journalist, novelist, poet, artist and art critic, essayist, theologian, propagandist, philosopher, and creator of the wily old Father Brown - G. K. Chesterton is one of the most beguiling authors of the early twentieth century. When asked to perform a lecture tour in 1921, Chesterton was in a slump of depression. He had recently lost his brother to the First World War and his wavering faith in the face of the horrors of the conflict only intensified his malaise. 'What I Saw in America' tells us as much about the author and his particular views as it does about his destination. Indeed, Chesterton's personalised observations - his aversion to imperialism, capitalism, Anglo-Americanism and his commitment to democracy and fraternity - are distinguished by the piercing wit for which he is famed.
