Sinopse

You will rejoice to hear that no disaster has accompanied the commencement of an enterprise which you have regarded with such evil forebodings. I arrived here yesterday, and my first task is to assure my dear sister of my welfare and increasing confidence in the success of my undertaking.I am already far north of London, and as I walk in the streets of Petersburgh, I feel a cold northern breeze play upon my cheeks, which braces my nerves and fills me with delight. Do you understand this feeling? This breeze, which has travelled from the regions towards which I am advancing, gives me a foretaste of those icy climes. Inspirited by this wind of promise, my daydreams become more fervent and vivid. I try in vain to be persuaded that the pole is the seat of frost and desolation; it ever presents itself to my imagination as the region of beauty and delight. There, Margaret, the sun is for ever visible, its broad disk just skirting the horizon and diffusing a perpetual splendour. There—for with your leave, my sister, I will put some trust in preceding navigators—there snow and frost are banished; and, sailing over a calm sea, we may be wafted to a land surpassing in wonders and in beauty every region hitherto discovered on the habitable globe. Its productions and features may be without example, as the phenomena of the heavenly bodies undoubtedly are in those undiscovered solitudes

Tongues of Conscience (1898) is a collection of five thought-provoking stories where an innocent, but selfish, action leads to horrific consequences. Robert Hichens writes some wonderfully evocative descriptions of nature: from a raw and exposed violent seascape, to the serene and idyllic countryside “…the violets seemed to sing in odours…” , to a train pushing through the white-out of a blizzard. In Sea Change an artist with a dark secret (“…I painted for him in words, the varying colors of waves in different seas… I drowned little Jack in the sea.”) shares the details of his guilt with a priest who tells a simple white lie in an effort to save his tortured friend’s sanity. In “William Foster”, the works of an author rouses his own wife’s religious nature with a most shocking result. In The Cry of the Child a gifted but egotistic doctor is haunted by the wail of his dead baby, but finds salvation with the sacrifice of someone else’s most selfless act. In How Love Came to Professor Guildea a scientist whose research has done wonderful things for humanity, confronts the terror of finding himelf loved. And finally, in The Lady and the Beggar, a wealthy woman’s will leaves her bounty to the poor, but only after she learns a very expensive lesson.. - Summary by LisaR

"Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful."
A young scientist’s obsession with the secret of life leads to the creation of a sentient being—and a descent into a nightmare of isolation and revenge. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is not merely a ghost story; it is the foundational work of modern science fiction and a haunting exploration of what it means to be human.
As Victor Frankenstein pushes the boundaries of nature, he is forced to confront the devastating consequences of playing God. From the icy peaks of the Swiss Alps to the desolate reaches of the Arctic, this epic struggle between creator and creature remains one of the most intellectually stimulating and emotionally profound novels in the history of literature.
In this high-fidelity production, listeners will experience:
The Original Gothic Horror: A chilling atmosphere of dread, obsession, and moral decay.
Philosophical Depth: Deep inquiries into the ethics of science, the nature of loneliness, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Unforgettable Characters: The tragic Victor Frankenstein and his misunderstood, articulate creation.
Experience the story that defined a genre and continues to challenge the conscience of the modern world.

A searing Southern Gothic saga comes to life in this immersive audiobook experience, where whispered histories echo through the Texas Hill Country and a family’s fate hangs in the balance.
On the eve of the Civil War, Polish immigrants Marcin and Agnieszka Anderwald arrive in Bandera, Texas, longing for a new beginning in a land they hope will offer faith, fertile soil, and freedom. But their hopes curdle into dread when Marcin stirs a vengeful presence—an ancient specter determined to claim the hearts, minds, and souls of the Anderwalds and all who stand with them.
Across generations, the family and their community of immigrant outsiders, Arab camel wranglers, battle-scarred soldiers, and a songstress slipping into madness face their own reckonings with an evil that refuses to die. As dark forces tighten their grip, one question remains: can the Anderwalds free themselves from the curse that binds them, or are they destined to remain forever wretched and undone?
Hailed as “a genre-bending thrill ride through Old Texas” with “characters so well-crafted they crawl off the page,” The Wretched and Undone was named a Killer Nashville Top Pick for 2024 and a Claymore Award Finalist for Best Southern Gothic.
This haunting tale is brought vividly to life by Scott Fleming, a seasoned performer with more than 30 years in professional theatre, television, voice acting, and vocal coaching. With over 100 audiobooks to his name—including works by Colin Forbes, Morgan Greene, Jack Probyn, and Richard Doyle—Fleming delivers a captivating, atmospheric performance that amplifies every chilling turn. Listeners may also recognize him from his powerful narration of Reclaiming Mni Sota by Colin Mustful.
Step into a world where history, horror, and humanity collide—told with spellbinding intensity in a performance you won’t soon forget.

MESSAGES: The message is hand written on a scrap of paper stuffed in an envelope. It reads: 'Are you blind to the truth?' I study the shaky capitals, attempting to winkle out some clue about the sender, then I stow it in the filing drawer with the others. The messages are delivered when I'm out. They lie on the doormat waiting for me in their cheap manila envelopes, the flap tucked in rather than stuck down.
