Summary

This classic Civil War novel portrays the rise and fall of Stonewall Jackson and the bravery of the men who fought and died alongside him When the American South secedes from the Union, Richard Cleave of Virginia answers the call to arms. The Confederate Army’s victory at Bull Run in the first months of the war bolsters the enthusiasm of the eager young men, Cleave among them, who march proudly behind their able leader, Brigadier General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Shortly thereafter, the Valley Campaign of 1862 showcases Jackson’s ingenious strategies and bold cavalry maneuvers, offering hope of an early Confederate victory. But for artilleryman Cleave, the high cost of war is rapidly becoming apparent in the staggering loss of life and limb, as Stonewall and his army march toward a fateful reckoning at Chancellorsville.   The daughter of a Confederate veteran and cousin to Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston, Mary Johnston was one of the most popular authors of the early twentieth century. In The Long Roll, she brings America’s bloodiest conflict to life with electrifying battlefield scenes and vivid historical detail, inspiring a grand tradition of Civil War literature that includes Gone with the Wind and The Killer Angels. When Daniel Blackland was six, he ingested his first bone fragment, a bit of kraken spine plucked out of the sand during a visit with his demanding, brilliant, and powerful magician father, Sebastian. When Daniel was twelve, he watched Sebastian die at the hands of the Hierarch of Southern California, devoured for the heightened magic layered deep within his bones. Now, years later, Daniel is a petty thief with a forged identity. Hiding amid the crowds in Los Angeles--the capital of the Kingdom of Southern California--Daniel is trying to go straight. But his crime-boss uncle has a heist he wants Daniel to perform: break into the Hierarch's storehouse of magical artifacts and retrieve Sebastian's sword, an object of untold power. For this dangerous mission, Daniel will need a team he can rely on, so he brings in his closest friends from his years in the criminal world. There's Moth, who can take a bullet and heal in mere minutes. Jo Alverado, illusionist. The multitalented Cassandra, Daniel's ex. And, new to them all, the enigmatic, knowledgeable Emma, with her British accent and her own grudge against the powers-that-be. The stakes are high, and the stage is set for a showdown that might just break the magic that protects a long-corrupt regime. Extravagant and yet moving, Greg van Eekhout's "California Bones" is an epic adventure set in a city of canals and secrets and casual brutality--different from the world we know, yet familiar and true.

One of the masterpieces of classical literature, the "Histories" describes how a small and quarrelsome band of Greek city states united to repel the might of the Persian empire. But while this epic struggle forms the core of his work, Herodotus' natural curiosity frequently gives rise to colorful digressions - a description of the natural wonders of Egypt; an account of European lake-dwellers; and far-fetched accounts of dog-headed men and gold-digging ants. With its kaleidoscopic blend of fact and legend, the "Histories" offers a compelling Greek view of the world of the fifth century BC.BOOK 8: URANIA: The Greeks engaged in the sea-service were the following. The Atheniansfurnished a hundred and twenty-seven vessels to the fleet, which were manned in part by the Plataeans, who, though unskilled in such matters, were led by their active and daring spirit to undertake this duty.

Our Laodicean Paula Power, the daughter of a wealthy Victorian railway engineer, is the sole inheritor of the ancient De Stancy Castle. The castle requires much modernisation and repair so she sets about securing a young, up and coming architect, George Somerset, to undertake the project. Immediately captivated Somerset falls in love with our heroine but alas, he is not her only suitor. Paula, “the modern flower in a mediaeval flower-pot” while attracted to him yearns for the dashing Captain De Stancy and the aristocratic background he represents. The novel “A Laodicean” was published in 1881. Like many Victorian novels it was first published in serial format. Unlike many of his novels this story is set in the more contemporary setting with many advancements of this fast moving, technological period. As Thomas Hardy himself suggested that for the “large and happy section of the reading public which has not yet reached ripeness of years - "A Laodicean" may perhaps help to while away an idle afternoon.”
