Sinopsis

In Mary Johnston's historical novel "1492," the author artfully navigates the turbulent waters of exploration and conquest during a pivotal moment in history. Through a vivid narrative infused with rich detail and lyrical prose, she chronicles the voyages and discoveries of Christopher Columbus, juxtaposing the awe of exploration with the harrowing consequences of European colonization. Johnston's sophisticated style melds historical accuracy with fictional embellishment, allowing readers to experience the multifaceted societal dynamics and personal conflicts faced by both the explorers and the indigenous peoples they encountered. Mary Johnston, a prominent figure in early 20th-century American literature, possessed a fervent dedication to social issues, particularly in the context of women's rights and colonial exploitation. Her background as a suffragist and her keen interest in American history profoundly influenced her creative endeavors, leading her to highlight the often-overlooked perspectives in narratives of historical significance. Johnston's works are characterized by their moral engagement and are imbued with a feminist spirit, reflecting her desire to advocate for justice and equity. "1492" is a compelling read for those who seek a nuanced understanding of the complexities of exploration and its far-reaching impacts. Johnston's eloquence and insight into human nature make this novel not just a historical account but a poignant exploration of the moral dilemmas that arise in the pursuit of ambition. Readers interested in the intersections of history, ethics, and literature will find this work both enlightening and thought-provoking.

Alexander Kuprin was born in Narovchat, Penza in Russia on 7th September 1870.
At 3 his Father died and he and mother moved to Moscow. By 10 he was enrolled at the Second Moscow Military High School and there his interest in literature began. The Alexander Military Academy followed and two years later he was a sub-lieutenant and posted to an Infantry Regiment for a further four years.
Despite his duties he was a now a keen writer and published his first short story at this time. His military duties also garnered him experiences for his breakthrough work ‘The Duel’. Leaving the military he left for Kiev to work for local newspapers. He continued to publish both stories and novels and by 1901 he was in St Petersburg becoming part of a group that included Chekhov, Ivan Bunin, Maxim Gorky and Leonid Andreyev.
In the years that followed further controversial works and acclaim followed. His comments on the regime meant he was also put under secret police surveillance.
As World War I erupted, Kuprin opened a military hospital but was then given command of an infantry company in Finland. He was soon discharged on grounds of ill health.
The October Revolution saw him praise Lenin, but he warned that the Bolsheviks threatened Russian culture and might cause further widespread suffering to the peasants. As Civil War raged he took his family to Helsinki and then on to Paris.
Exile saw his talents decline further and his succumbing to alcoholism. He became lonely and withdrawn. The family's poverty increased his malaise.
In May 1937, the Kuprin’s returned to Moscow. He now saw his work published but wrote almost nothing new. In 1938 his health rapidly deteriorated. Already suffering from a kidney problems and sclerosis, he had now developed cancer of the oesophagus.

Critical mass may be a minimum for chain reaction or a maximum for stability. Either way, things go off. Collective consciousness and common behaviors accelerate in chaos.
Subtle change builds to drastic consequence. Mass media covers hateful simpletons gaining market share on slap diddle, shouting lies on fire. Road rage is self-expression. Stress compresses, on the way to another big bang.
Will human density bring a correction, as predicted? Will things shake out, reducing population to carrying capacity? Will people trigger more pandemic, war and starvation? Will Christian stormtroopers save America? Will a Mexican named Jesus romance a former candidate in prison? Maybe not, given the tough route from maximum security to club confinement. But connections matter, and prospects entertain. Chin up. With hearts and minds open, we laugh to keep from crying.
IOTA: Two titles here are not stories in technical form. An essay on big changes in short time, Lowcountry Longview looks at fast change in short time, as media pour gas on the campfire.
Dinner With the Hoi Polloi, another variant, is impromptu narrative on anti-Semitism served as banquet fare in pathos.
These tales are based in real time.
