Sinopse

In "Jerome, A Poor Man," Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman explores the multifaceted struggles of her titular character, a working-class man grappling with the harsh realities of poverty and societal expectations in late 19th-century America. Freeman's narrative is characterized by a naturalistic style, employing detailed descriptions and psychological depth to illuminate Jerome's internal conflicts and the external pressures he faces. The story unfolds against the backdrop of New England, with richly drawn settings that reflect the emotional landscape of its characters, showcasing the tension between economic hardship and personal aspiration. Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman was a pioneering figure in American literature, known for her incisive portrayals of rural New England life and the experiences of women. Raised in a modest household and familiar with the nuances of financial struggle, Freeman's own life experiences fueled her compassion for the marginalized. Her ability to weave complex, realistic characters into her narratives stemmed from both her keen observation and her deep empathy, which served to humanize the often-overlooked struggles faced by the poor. "Jerome, A Poor Man" is highly recommended for readers interested in social realism and the intricate dynamics of class in literature. Freeman's astute character studies and the poignant depiction of Jerome's journey not only shed light on the socio-economic issues of her time but also resonate with contemporary themes, making it a compelling read for anyone curious about the intersection of personal and societal hardship.

This collection brings together stories and reflections in which Leo Tolstoy turns inward.
Stripped of grandeur, these works offer something more intimate: the inner noise of conscience, the weight of faith, the silence before death.
    A servant's silence, a horse's memory, a dying man's doubt—these are not performances.
They are questions, waiting quietly for whoever dares to ask the same.
Tolstoy isn't offering answers. He's writing toward something deeper. And the questions haven't aged a day.

Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature

Rabindranath Tagore was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. More than a century later, his stories still feel startlingly alive.
In Selected Short Stories, one of the world's great literary voices turns his clear, compassionate gaze on ordinary lives caught at extraordinary moments. A haunted marble palace on a lonely riverside, a talkative child and the Afghan fruit-seller who loves her as his own daughter, a village boy exiled to the suffocating city, a mute girl given in marriage, a loyal servant destroyed by devotion -- Tagore finds the epic in the everyday, the universal in the intimate.
Blending lyric beauty with psychological insight, these tales move effortlessly between Calcutta streets and quiet villages, between ghostly apparitions and the harsh light of social reality. They are stories of love and separation, guilt and sacrifice, poverty and pride. But above all, the frail, fierce dignity of the human heart.
Admired by writers from W.B. Yeats to William Butler, compared to Chekhov and Maupassant yet unlike anyone but himself, Tagore helped shape modern world literature. His fiction has been read, retranslated, and rediscovered across continents for generations.
This collection is the perfect doorway into his work -- essential for lovers of classic literature, book clubs seeking deeply moving stories, and any reader who wants to understand why Tagore's voice, born in nineteenth-century Bengal, still speaks so powerfully to our own time.

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."

Elizabeth Bennet is spirited, intelligent, and fiercely independent—qualities that often clash with the rigid social expectations of her time. When the wealthy and brooding Mr. Darcy arrives in her quiet neighborhood of Meryton, Elizabeth is quick to judge him as arrogant and cold. Darcy, in turn, finds Elizabeth "tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me." What follows is a masterful dance of misunderstandings, sharp-tongued wit, and the slow realization that first impressions are rarely correct. As the Bennet family navigates the perils of marriage markets and social scandals, Elizabeth and Darcy must each overcome their own flaws—her prejudice and his pride—to find a love that transcends status.

A Masterclass in Irony and Satire: Austen's sharpest weapon is her humor. From the absurdly sycophantic Mr. Collins to the perpetually nervous Mrs. Bennet, the novel populates its world with characters who provide a hilarious yet biting critique of a society obsessed with "connections" and inheritance laws.

The Evolution of the Heart: The heart of the story lies in the intellectual match between Elizabeth and Darcy. Unlike the passive heroines of many contemporary novels, Elizabeth challenges Darcy's worldview, forcing him to earn her respect. Their journey from mutual dislike to profound devotion is set against the beautiful backdrops of the English countryside, from the modest comfort of Longbourn to the breathtaking grandeur of Pemberley.

    Sir Walter Scott

Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, FRSE, was a Scottish playwright, novelist and poet who became the first English-language author to be internationally celebrated within their own lifetime. Although he wrote extensively, he was by profession an advocate and judge, and continued to practice alongside his writing career. Scott was fascinated by the oral tradition of the Scottish borders, with its poetry, folklore and legend, and he collected stories throughout his youth and as a young man, almost obsessively. Scott’s friend, James Ballantyne, had founded a printing press in 1796 , and had published much of Scott’s early work, including the Lay of the Last Minstrel which firmly established Scott’ position in the Scottish literary tradition, and that of English literature as a whole. Scott was by now printing regularly with the Ballantynes and convinced them to relocate their press to Edinburgh and became a partner in their business. In 1813 Scott was offered the post of Poet Laureate, but turned the offer down and the position was taken by Robert Southey. Until now he had predominately written poetry however he became interested in the novel form despite its comparative unpopularity for a supposed aesthetic inferiority. Owing to this he published his first novel, Waverley, anonymously, in 1814. Its success encouraged several more novels, all of which were published under “Author of Waverley” as a means of piggybacking the success of Waverley and because Scott feared his traditional father would disapprove of such a trivial pursuit as novel writing. Scott came to be known as the “Wizard of the North” for his writing, and among literary circles it was an open secret that he was the author of these novels. In 1815 the Prince Regent, George, dined with him as he wished to meet the “Author of Waverley”. By 1825 a banking crisis was crippling the nation and the Ballantyne printing company went under with Scott left with debts of £130,000 (approx. £10mil in 2014). His pride kept him from accepting financial aid (even from his admirer, King George) or declaring himself bankrupt. He resolved to continue writing until he could pay his debts. Compounding these unfortunate circumstances was the death of his wife in 1826. However, he maintained his enormous literary output until 1831 by which point his health had begun to fail and he died on September 21st 1832. At his death he was still in debt, the continuing sales of his work ensured that all debt was discharged shortly after he died.
