Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.

James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.

From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.

Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.

A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.

Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.

Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.

James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.

M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

His classic story ‘Whistle and I’ll Come to You My Lad’ exquisitely reveals how a young professor on holiday chances on a buried whistle and folklore becomes terrifying fact.

    O. Henry was the pen name of William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), an American writer of outstanding short stories, known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and surprise endings. "Between Rounds" is the tale of a lost child, the six-year old son of the owner of a boarding house with a colourful and ecclectic range of boarders. For the brief period of the child's absence the inhabitants pause in their regular activities and relationships. The interlude is described in a warm and gently humorous manner.

The Wisdom of Father Brown is the second book in the series of cases involving the eccentric yet competent detective. Invented by renowned author, essayist and journalist G. K. Chesterton, Father Brown is an amateur sleuth whose day job involves preaching to his congregation at church. Chesterton himself was a committed Christian who wrote volumes of essays and fiction surrounding faith and spirituality, and would base his Father Brown stories upon a priest - Father John O'Connor - he himself knew. Despite its intention as a parody, the Father Brown books became a popular hit in early 20th century Britain as well as the USA. Today they remain a well-considered and much-liked classic series which fans of detective fiction return to more than a century after their original publication. Characterised by his easily digestible style, ready use and exposure of paradox, and his use of wit and humour to advance argument, Chesterton's fiction and non-fiction writings on the topics of human behaviour and wider society remain relevant and poignant to this day.

Orson Welles was an actor, director, writer and producer who worked in theatre, radio, TV and film. His film Citizen Kane (1941) is ranked as one of the greatest movies ever made.In 1937, Orson Welles and John Houseman founded the Mercury Theatre, an independent repertory theatre company that presented a series of productions (including Julius Caesar) on Broadway through 1941. To help earn money to stage his productions, Welles moonlighted as a radio actor. In 1937, at age 22, he clouded men's minds as radio's first Lamont Cranston, alias The Shadow. In his own radio series, The Mercury Theatre on the Air, Welles dramatized the H.G. Wells science-fiction classic The War of the Worlds and caused widespread panic when listeners thought that Earth was being invaded by Martians. This broadcast earned Orson Welles great notoriety and a film contract with RKO. He followed up Citizen Kane with 12 other feature films, the most acclaimed being The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Touch of Evil (1958) and Chimes of Midnight (1966). Even though Welles stayed quite busy acting and producing films, he found time to appear in many radio shows during the 1940s and 1950s. We've carefully selected 12 of his finest radio performances for this collection and we hope that you will enjoy them!
