Summary

There is hope for us yet: “Stevenson’s engaging commentary has the ability to restore your faith in human ingenuity in the face of adversity.” —Geographical magazine   Our systems are failing. Old models—for education, healthcare and government, food production, energy supply—are creaking under the weight of modern challenges. As the world’s population heads towards 10 billion, it’s clear we need new approaches. In We Do Things Differently, historian and futurologist Mark Stevenson sets out to find them, across four continents.   From Brazilian favelas to high-tech Boston, from rural India to a shed inventor in England’s home counties, Mark Stevenson travels the world to find the advance guard reimagining our future. At each stop, he meets innovators who have already succeeded in challenging the status quo, pioneering new ways to make our world more sustainable, equitable, and humane. Populated by extraordinary characters—including Detroit citizens who created new jobs and promoted healthy eating by building greenhouses; an Austrian mayor who built a new biomass plant using the by-product of a local flooring company; and an Indian doctor who crowdsourced his research and published his findings online—We Do Things Differently paints a riveting picture of what can be done to address the world’s most pressing dilemmas, offering a much-needed dose of down-to-earth optimism. It is a window on (and a roadmap to) a different and better future.   “Stevenson writes with enormous warmth and humor.” —Cory Doctorow

The Tricycle Effect is an inspiring self-help book for leaders, children, athletes, families, businesses, and organizations of all sizes written by Dane A. Deutsch.
Practicing the principles laid out in each chapter through “straight from the heart” stories will teach you how important it is to lead with Character First.
Many leaders today get caught up in reading books and attending seminars that focus on “people skills” like leadership, teamwork, communication, etc., but in the end, fail to focus on “character.”
Character is the one attribute that each leader requires to lead their organization to True North on their Moral compass, from success to significance, from chaos to structure, and from a culture of self-entitlement to a culture of trust, ownership, and servant leadership.
Through each chapter, Dane shares personal stories of why leading with “character first” will help a person become more productive, successful, and significant.
“The Tricycle Effect” is what every leader needs to “pedal” themselves, their family, and their organization from success to significance.

  • All Good Things Come to an End: How to Close a Negotiation - How to Develop the Skill of Closing in Order to Get the Best Possible Outcome from a Negotiation - cover

All Good Things Come to an End:...

The part of a negotiation that every negotiator wants to get to as quickly as possible is the closing. This is when your prize is insight: the deal that you want is so close that you could almost reach out and touch it. However, it turns out that this is the most dangerous part of a negotiation – it can all slip away from you if you don't know how to navigate the closing correctly.

    What You'll Find Inside:

6 WAYS TO BREAK A NEGOTIATION DEADLOCK (PLUS ONE MORE)
EVERY NEGOTIATION NEEDS A RAP(PORT) STAR!
SUCCEED BY BRINGING THE GHOST WHISPERER TO THE NEGOTIATION
A SALES NEGOTIATOR’S GUIDE TO DEALING WITH A DEADLOCK

Negotiating is a skill that we hone by using it over and over again. Opportunities to practice our negotiating skills come in all shapes and sizes and buying a car is one such event. Another way to get better at this thing that we call negotiating is by watching what other profession negotiators do. Negotiations between businesses and their workers, such as Verizon and the CWA / IBEW or even between two businesses such as EA and Take Two can offer us important learning experiences.

In labor negotiations, it's the balance of power that can often determine which side walks away from the bargaining table with the best deal. Over at Boeing with the large number of different unions that the company has to deal with this has been shown to be true over and over again.

In order to be able to successfully close a negotiation, you need to have built up a strong foundation that will allow you to move the negotiation to a close. This involves building rapport with the other side of the table and also knowing just exactly who is calling the shots for the other side.

Finally, the closing of a negotiation often comes about because of a deadline or perhaps because both parties have reached a deadlock that they can't resolve. In both cases, your ability to get the deal that you want will be at risk. Knowing how to deal with these situations is a core skill that every negotiator needs to master.

The story of the makeup artist who changed the film industry—and the world of modern cosmetics. Includes photos.   When Polish wigmaker and cosmetician Max Factor arrived in Los Angeles at the dawn of the motion picture industry, “make-up” had been associated only with stage performers and ladies of the oldest profession. Appalled by the garish paints worn by actors, Factor introduced the first “flexible” greasepaint for film in 1914. With a few careful brush strokes, a lot of innovation, and the kind of luck that can happen only in Hollywood, Max Factor changed the meaning of glamour. His innovations can be experienced in every tube of lipstick, palette of eye shadow, and bottle of nail lacquer used today.    Join author Erika Thomas as she reveals the makeup guru's expert beauty tips and the story of how he created the most iconic golden-era looks that are as relevant today as they were nearly a century ago.
