Sinopse

Regional Identity Variations explores the diverse experiences of LGBTQ individuals worldwide, highlighting how geography profoundly shapes self-disclosure, policy support, and legal recognition. The book argues that LGBTQ experiences aren't monolithic; instead, they're deeply affected by local cultural norms, political systems, and economic realities, leading to significant regional variations.

One intriguing concept discussed is the Visibility Paradox, illustrating how increased public awareness can both empower and endanger LGBTQ individuals based on their socio-political environment. The book examines Policy Diffusion, analyzing how legal advancements in one area influence policy changes elsewhere, or fail to do so.

It begins by defining region beyond simple geography and then delves into patterns of public disclosure, policy support, and legal recognition across continents. Utilizing survey data, ethnographic studies, and legal analyses, the book offers a unique perspective by combining quantitative analysis with qualitative insights.

The study connects to human rights law, international relations, and public health and aims to inform a broad audience, including policymakers, activists, and anyone interested in the global landscape of LGBTQ rights. By moving beyond surface-level comparisons, Regional Identity Variations provides a holistic understanding of LGBTQ experiences, offering practical implications for promoting equality globally.

Economist and award-winning author Sylvia Ann Hewlett blends vivid stories with powerful new data in assessing the impact of the #MeToo movement in corporate America and provides concrete action to help executives and companies create more inclusive and safe work environments for women, people of color, and LGBTQ employees.

While the #MeToo movement has exposed the enormous harm done by sexual misconduct in the workplace, the movement’s full promise has not been fulfilled, Sylvia Ann Hewlett argues. Showcasing new data on the incidence of sexual harassment and assault at work, she reveals how the movement has focused almost exclusively on white women and failed to support other vulnerable groups who are also targets of abuse. Black men, gay men and women, and Latinas experience particularly high rates of sexual harassment and assault.
In addition to exploring the movement’s limitations, Hewlett examines the collateral damage inflicted by #MeToo. She looks at hits to the bottom line (lawsuits and settlements, tarnished brands, and stock devaluations) and hits to the talent pipeline. In particular she shows how male leaders, fearful of gossip and legal action, are increasingly skittish about sponsoring young women, no matter how high performing they are. This makes it much more likely that women will stall out mid-career and will deprive companies of diversity in the C-Suite and “gender smarts” around decision-making tables. Digging deep into examples that range from Fox News, Nike, and Google to CBS, Michigan State University, and the Catholic Church, Hewlett lays bare the financial losses associated with sexual misconduct scandals. No wonder corporate chief risk officers newly have #MeToo in their line of sight!
A third of this book is devoted to solutions and Hewlett offers a three-pronged strategy, combining legal remedies with individual and corporate action steps that can be used to protect employees and businesses they work for. Drawing from companies as different as IBM and IPG she discusses “experiments at the edge” as well as more evolved initiatives that can help any corporation create a more equitable and safer environment.

Rural Wrongs tells a shocking story about how the hunting bans enacted in England, Wales and Scotland some 20 years ago have proved to be a disaster for animal welfare. Instead of making life better for the fox, the brown hare and the red deer, they have often made life worse. As Lord Moore says in his foreword: "Rural Wrongs is the first serious work of its kind. It is a vivid and heartfelt tale about what happens to animal and human landscapes when people meddle in them for the wrong reasons. It should serve as a handbook for all those seeking to show why bad law must be replaced by rules that truly address animal welfare."

Temperance is not merely about denying oneself pleasures, but rather it is an art form that requires the mastery of self-awareness and the thoughtful regulation of desires. In this chapter, we explore the journey toward achieving balance in life by understanding and applying the principle of temperance in everyday circumstances. Temperance involves a mindful approach to living, where each decision is carefully weighed against personal values and long-term well-being. This approach invites individuals to consider what is truly necessary and to avoid the excesses that can lead to imbalance.
At its core, the art of temperance calls for introspection and self-reflection. It encourages the cultivation of habits that foster a sense of control and awareness. By recognizing the triggers that lead to impulsive actions, one can develop strategies to counteract those impulses and maintain a steady course toward a balanced life. This mindful practice is a continuous process that requires both patience and perseverance. Every choice, whether big or small, contributes to the overall picture of one's well-being. When practiced consistently, temperance transforms not only individual habits but also enhances relationships and personal growth.
The practice of temperance extends beyond the realm of personal behavior into the wider sphere of social interactions and professional responsibilities. It is a quality that can enhance leadership and foster environments where collective well-being is prioritized over individual excess. When temperance is embraced as a guiding principle, it leads to a more thoughtful, measured, and ultimately rewarding approach to life. Rather than reacting impulsively to every situation, a temperate individual considers the broader context, assessing both immediate and long-term impacts of their actions.

The two titles in this bundle are:
Agriculture - Agriculture stands at the heart of human civilization, sustaining populations, economies, and ecosystems around the globe. As the primary source of food and materials for countless industries, agriculture is fundamental to our daily lives. Yet, as demand for food and resources grows, traditional farming practices have come under scrutiny for their impact on land, water, and ecosystems. This situation has sparked a profound exploration into how agriculture can evolve to meet future needs without compromising environmental health or resource availability. In response to these challenges, sustainable agriculture has emerged as a guiding framework. Rather than depleting resources, sustainable agriculture seeks to work in harmony with nature, fostering productive systems that can endure and even improve over time.
Environmental Science - Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary field that integrates various scientific disciplines to study the natural world and the impact of human activities on it. This branch of science explores the complex interactions between living organisms, their physical surroundings, and the broader ecosystems they form. The primary goal of environmental science is to understand how natural systems function, identify environmental problems, and develop strategies for addressing these issues. At its core, environmental science seeks to answer fundamental questions about the earth's resources, how they are used, and how human actions influence the balance of ecosystems. It draws from biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and social sciences to provide a comprehensive understanding of the environment.

This highly readable illustrated biography on the Percy Tenantry Volunteers has been written with exclusive access to the current Duke of Northumberland's treasure trove of archive records. This book is for anyone interested in military history, especially Revolutionary and the Napoleonic war period, and for those looking at the local history of Northumberland, and especially Alnwick Castle.
The history of Britain's conflict with France between 1793 and 1815 is well documented. Nevertheless, one aspect that has scant coverage, is that of the role of Volunteers. In 1798, afraid of impending invasion by France's all-conquering armies the British desperately needed to defend their shores. To The Call of Bugles reveals, for the first time, how among those who stood forward in Home Guard style military bodies, there was no finer example than that of the valiant Percy Tenantry Volunteers, created by the 2nd Duke of Northumberland, General Hugh Percy. This amateur body of men, 1,500 strong, consisting of cavalry, artillery and riflemen, was put together, trained, armed, dressed and operated by General Hugh Percy. This book provides stories from the original volunteers, an in-depth understanding of how such a corps was organised and reveals how they were fashioned into an elite and innovative fighting force.
