Summary

Two brothers in a family of superheroes strive to be heroic despite their super-lame super-powers in this funny and heartwarming middle grade adventure.

On February 29th, at 4:23 p.m., everyone in the Bailey family over the age of twelve gets a superpower. No one knows why or how. All the Baileys know is that it's their duty to protect the world from those evil, supervillainous Johnsons. *shakes fists*

Today, Rafter Bailey and his brother Benny are finally going to get their superpowers. Benny wants to be a speedy, and Rafter hopes he gets his grandpa's superstrength. But when their powers arrive, they are—well—duds. Rafter can light matches on polyester, and Benny can turn his innie belly button into an outie.

How is Rafter supposed to defeat his algebra class nemesis, Juanita Johnson, now? And worse still, what if everything he thinks he knows about superheroes is a lie? He may not have an awesome power, but with the help of his wits and an unexpected friend, he could just be almost super.

As author David R. Collins traveled around Illinois, librarians and teachers everywhere begged him to write a book about noble Polish patriot Casimir Pulaski. The teachers complained that there was a Pulaski state holiday, as well as Pulaski towns, schools, and streets across the country, yet few students know who he was or what he did.Casimir lived a short but active life--he was only fifteen when he took on Russian troops that attempted to conquer his homeland in the mid-1700s. When the invasion of Poland became inevitable several years later, he went to America to help the Colonists fight for their freedom from the dominating British monarchy. Young Casimir helped develop new cavalry units and fighting techniques, and eventually was recognized as one of the most important officers of the American Revolution. George Washington once said that Casimir was a true hero because he indiscriminately risked his life in the name of democracy. This biographical account of a young man's struggle for freedom and liberty for all people is an admirable example of the democratic spirit.

Originally published between 1927 and 1958, the 26 classic books about Freddy the Pig are now going on to delight a sixth generation of children. Freddy the Pig, the “Renaissance Pig” (The New York Times Book Review) of Bean Farm, is back to thrill his fans of all ages in facsimile editions of these all-American children’s classics. In Freddy Goes Camping, Mr. Camphor’s aunts, Minerva and Elmira, are staying with him, much to his disgust. “There’s two kinds of aunts,” he says. “There’s the regular kind, and then there’s the other kind. Mine are the other kind.” He enlists Freddy’s aid in an attempt to rid his house of the ladies, with the result that Freddy and his chums become entangled with some extremely unfriendly ghosts in an abandoned summer hotel. Freddy camps out, goes canoeing, and tosses flapjacks like a pro when he’s not mixing it up with the eerie Mr. Eha . . .

The acclaimed Marigold series in one volume. “A mixture of fantasy, romance, comedy, and coming-of-age . . . and it’s all great fun.” —School Library Journal   Once upon a Marigold, a fairy tale turned upside down, inside out, and completely over the top! Join Christian and Marigold through their one-of-a-kind adventures in this trilogy of tales that’s part comedy, part love story, part everything-but-the-kitchen-sink.   With echoes of William Goldman’s modern classic The Princess Bride, Jean Ferris’s hilarious parody of “Once upon a time . . .” overflows with oddball characters and sage observations to create a happily-ever-after that’s just the beginning.  Once Upon a Marigold was named an ALA Notable Children’s Book, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, and a New York Public Library 100 Books for Reading and Sharing title.  Praise for the Marigold series   “In a gratifying fantasy that contains elements of classic fairy tales, Ferris breathes new life into archetypal characters by adding unexpected and often humorous dimensions to their personalities.” —Publishers Weekly   “Cold indeed is the heart not made warm by this bubbly fairy-tale romance.” —Kirkus Reviews    “Ferris leisurely combines elements of adventure, fantasy, romance, and humor.” —Booklist    “An upbeat fairy-tale adventure.” —School Library Journal
